I use cool edit pro 2.1, sound forge 6.0 and vegas video (don't let the name fool you - it's a very powerful multitrack program). sound forge is a very powerful wave editor and can chop up samples automaticaly within parameters that you set.. good luck

man, i've looking for that chopping option on sound forge for the longest. Could u give me a quick direction on how to do this, at least which option is it under? From here, can u directly transport this chopped sample, (as is) to the MPC?

sample editing with Sound Forge 6.0
First things first , go into the file option and hit open. now select the folder containing your sample and hit open. Now that that's done heres what you need to do. After highlighting the portion you wish to sample/chop, hit CTRL C, (to copy the part you want) then CTRL E (to paste it on a new board). If more slicing is necessary repeat and save what you like. Note: another way to cut back on sample size is to only copy the left channel being that the right one is going to be faint anyway. That is unless you tweak it with the effects options. My bad, I almost forgot. When you 've decided on what your're going to keep go into edit screen and hit trim/crop. This will cut off the extra parts not highlighted.

Auto Region might be what your looking for.. (chopping)
I chop using regions. auto region and extract region is automatic once you set the parameters. Auto region makes chopping so easy it should be outlawed.. Yes, you can take the samples directly to the MPC. I do it all the time. I start with a 16bit, 44.1khz wav and it chops up the sample you choose and it saves into whatever folder you want in the same format as the original.. Look for Auto Region/Extract Region..

thx for the jewel, a whole new world is about to open, but first a few questions. Do you use the markers to set your zones up, or is there another way. i only did it one time, but it still appears easier to use the mpc. do u just zoom in to find the exact chopping points? I know you can apply fx, but do u do it b4 or after the chop?

Auto region can find regions via a many different ways.
For example it can seperate every drums hit in phrase or loop for automaical and make seperate wave files of each drum hit for you to load into your mpc. You can easily get MANY drums hits from a 5 second sample. It is easier in sound forge to chop than you think. It is much easier than doing it on the MPC for me. I use to use markers until I learned what regions were and I never looked back after that. I don't do any effects before chopping. I process individual samples after the chop (Auto Region). IE. You can set the threshold volume of the chop to automatically give you samples that raise above a certain db. Try threshold of -30, attack 0 or (infinite) inf for drums.. You should be able to pick out some nice drums and process/color/shape afterwards..

first off...i'm not slow...
i thought i did all that without markers, but it didn't slice anything. i read the tutorials, but could grab the concept. the way u explain it, it would be much easier, becuz as i understand it, auto region finds valleys and peaks according to how you set the threshold, attack etc under auto region, right? when i did this, it processed it, but nothing (to the naked eye) happened. what am i missing? BTW thx for your help and quick responses!!

Auto Region
What I do is load the sample first.
Go to Auto Region
On the drop down menu choose "drum beats" then OK.
After that, you should see a bunch of white markers on your sample.
Then go back to the "Process" or is it "Tools" menu and choose "Extract Region".
Then choose a folder for all those little region camplse to go to.
When you go into that folder you wil see all those sample chops you just created..

One quick question, what do you set your regions to?

Different thresholds, attacks and releases depending on what I want to chop out of the sample/loop.
I usually will follow up EACH sample with a "noise gate - release" afterwards to get a nice quick/slow fade out at the end so I don't get any pops or clicks (sudden volume drops) using a batch converter of course cause it's very possible to have too many samples after you do the auto region thing.

new to chopping with software
Thanks for the input. The reason I asked was because I just recently began using Sound Forge for sample editing and I'm always looking to learn new techniques and shortcuts. If anything else comes to mind fill me in I'd appreciate it. PEACE
