Restoring mpc factory content

Hi

I know this has been discussed before but Im looking to restore my factory content after a previous owner deleted it. The reason being is I would like to get templates to work and in preferences the new project dialogue says demo/template/recent (not installed).

Ive contacted Akai and they sent me the zip of factory content which I put on a blank 16gb usb stick- I followed all their instructions and the mpc doesn't recognise it- when I power on the mpc it goes straight from the standard mpc screen to the normal sequence page. I also tried this on a 64gb sd card with no success.

Any ideas? It seems some people were able to do this and the mpc just automatically loaded the factory content upon booting up. Akai support has gone quiet.

The installer to put the content back on the internal drive requires two elements, the folder of actual content (expansions, demo projects etc) and a separate script which will run when you perform the boot up with button combos (can't remember the exact procedure). Did they send this script as well? If they've only sent the folder of content they it wont be copied to the internal drive. If you also have the script, then I guess they either sent the wrong one (each model needs a different script I believe) or it's user error. Double check the instructions, but you might have to chase up support, try the live chat for a potentially quicker response.

But you can just load the demo projects directly from your USB disk in the meantime.

Another option is to install one of the hacked firmwares with SSH access enabled, then you can just copy the content over to the internal drive using SFTP.

Hi Thanks- they sent me these files:
autorun.check
autorun.json
autorun.sh
Folder DATA (contains demos and expansions)
update-content.data

The instructions they gave are:
1. Download the .zip file.
2. Unzip the downloaded file.
3. Copy the contents (the “autorun” folder) onto either a USB stick, or an SD card (exFAT format, at least 16GB capacity), and make sure this content is placed in the root directory of the removable device - do NOT place the content inside a folder on the removable drive.
4. Turn on MPC and wait until the Demo selection screen pops up. (If you do not have a project Dialog box after startup, power off the MPC, insert your SD or USB and power it back on. The MPC will start the import automatically. skip to step 7)
5. Plug in the prepared USB stick or SD card.
6. A popup will appear asking if you want to download the contents. Press “YES”.
7. The MPC will reboot to a black screen and will start importing the content. DO NOT POWER OFF UNIT.
8. Unit will reboot after it has completed the import, and the content will be be available thereafter as normal.

Nothing happens when I have a usb stick/sd card with the files on it. Maybe the hacked firmware is the way to go?

have been in the same situation a few years ago when I had the mpc live and restored my content successfully.

In my instructions they also said:
"Once downloaded, unzip the contents. Inside you should find a folder named “autorun”. Copy this entire folder to the root menu of a blank USB stick.
Make sure that your MPC Live or X is turned off and connect it (the prepared usb media) to USB Port 1 of your MPC. Power on the MPC. It will automatically start the update procedure. This process should take about 10-20 Minues.

I got it sorted now- I realised I had copied the contents of the folder to the usb stick and not the folder itself- doh! After I did that it instantly recognised it and loaded the factory content so the template screen is back.

I try to install the factory content on my mpcx but it showing updateing content for 30 Minutes what can I do

It can take an hour or two. Did you use a fast USB drive?

OK, for anyone reading this thread, here's what I went through with a new unit and issues surrounding internal memory and an unstable OS.

WARNING: If AKAI advises you to DOWNGRADE your firmware from 2.4x to 2.15. DO NOT DO SO. this may BRICK your MPC X series, as it did mine.

Having contacted AKAI, I was advised to download V2.15 firmware and downgrade to that, then download the contents file and load it to a pen drive, etc. I warn ANYONE going through this, that instructions given by AKAI are INCORRECT! These instructions are misleading and confusing and can cause harm to your MPC.

I finally managed to resolve the mess by firstly upgrading to current firmware (at time of writing V3.5) and then doing a settings reset. I then erased internal expansions and synths from the internal memory because it was causing address conflicts with the installed 2tb SSD I loaded in.

How to go about this...

If you need to back up sensitive data, do this before you continue. I didn't luckily, so afforded myself skipping that headache.

Go to your browser, go to the internal drive, then navigate to expansions, hold down the shift key and press Delete on your display. do the same for expansions, etc.

Restart your MPC X series, then do this...

Firstly connect your device to the internet, either WIFI or Ethernet, doesn't matter.
Go to the activations tab, if you're not logged in, log in,
If you have installed an SSD to your MPC X / SE and you've backed up content to a safe place, select this drive for the synths and expansions directories, it'll be fine, just remember that files you'll need, keep on a backup volume.
Allow the MPC to download all the synths and plugins and install to the SSD and not internal memory. Yes, internal memory is stable, but 30gb internal memory with firmware updates, etc can disappear, leave internal memory for vital bits.
Once all plugins are installed, reboot the MPC X / MPC XSE
Connect your MPCX / MPC X SE to your host computer and launch the mpc desktop app. go to the tools menu and go to manage expansions. ensure all are selected in the dialogue box and export to the internal SSD you've named. this now sets up the MPC in a better and running state.

MY MPC X SE is now running but after a week's nightmare and very little help from AKI.

Time for a little clarification. AKAI REFUSE to provide the technician level software to factory rebuild the internal memory. They believe that the end user does not need access to this. so please be awre of this. The files earlier described in a response are not available for use or supply by akai, instead, you're best downloading the firmware installer, doing a host connect over USB to your PC / Mac and performing the update / repair that way. Please also be aware that a firmware upgrade / downgrade does not wipe the internal memory what so ever and there are no resources that AKAI will willingly provide to end users to do this. Instead it's a lot of manual faffing.

You will need access to your inmusic account to download the installers for the various libraries in order to resolve issues and do manual installs as described above, then you're back up and running.

So Basically...We F*cked it up for ourselves lol.

Now Akai is like..."WTF you deleted all that Beautiful Content? We gave you Multiple ways to save your own Files, to your OWN Media.... But Nahhhh Your OCD had to erase our Content....And you want US to send it to you again so you F*ck us over again?"

They should do a better job of warning users how to use their file system. Even some pop ups telling you saving to the internal drive can slow the unit down & other pop ups when trying to delete files that will cause problems. Currently they make too easy to fu*k something up. This topic should have its own sticky since so common.
