You can double them up.
You can eq, compress and limit each sample to taste
before you even program beats.
You can use better sounds.
You can mix/merge synth sounds with "real" drum sounds.

There's all kinds of stuff you can try.

Takes some work though.

Peace.

Try layering a few kicks together to make one bigger kick, same with snares, hats etc., if you do it enough you'll get the hang of what you like and what you don't. Of course, you have to start with good sounds to get a good final result.. crap in = crap out. I usually layer 2-4 kicks together, EQ a bit, then use a limiter and compress it. I also layer 3-4 snares on average to get the full sound that I want.

I recently placed same kick on 3 different pads, one pan left, one pan right, one flat. Shit almost busted my speakers hahahaha.... Mess with attack/decay, filters, tempo and other stuff when you layer them. Just mess around really and you will get your own methods, and your own sounds.

Try adding distortion from like a guitar pedal. I run a Boss distortion pedal through my aux on my mixer and it really fattens up drums to the point where it sounds like heavy tape saturation. Also, try running a slight delay through the channel that has hi hats and/or snare. It tends to give the beat more space and depth.
