Has anyone actually gotten one of these to verify that they are legit?

OK yo, here it goes.

Well, f your sample takes 4 bars to finish, then you need 4 bars.

What you should do is do something like set quantize to 8th notes, and get the sample to start at the beginning of the sequence, then watch when it ends, if it ends before the sequence loops, you should change the BPM of the sequence to a higher number (120 to 130 for example).

If the sequence loops before the sample finishes playing, then you need to slow down the BPM. Set the sample to mono and fine tune the BPM to make it loop seamlessly. You can also tune the sample to do this, but I find it better to set the sequence tempo to match the sample and then may down the drums and such.

how do i input this so that it loops for 4 bars? it's only letting me enter either 1 bar or 2 bars. i would still keep the loop to bar 1 though, right?

so i quantize with the edit function and set it to 8/8? will i maybe have two different BPMs going? one BPM set for the drum sequence and another BPM set for the melody sample sequence? next, how do i play both of these sequences together simultaneously and overdub. this probably invloves using the 2nd sequence function?

thanks for your help.

highlife,
you probably should have gone with the xl since it's more simplistic to use.

You gotta get at that manual until you understand the 60

The problem you are having is clearly explained in the manual in the Sequence section.

OK, I'll give you the answer to help get you started but get at that manual .
Bottom of page 68, 69 and 70 covers your problem.
You need to initialize the sequence to the settings you want to work with.
This will allow you to set up your default seq, time sig, number of bars, tempo etc.
As far as finding BPM of a loop, again bottom of page 51 and 52.

Go through the manual a little at a time and try things out while you read.

Now go try to make some heat.

word, thanks ntalec. i'm trying to get at least a good 3 hours a night in of reading and practice after work. believe, i'm trying to read through the manual but i have to admit some of the verbage is damned confusing.

i might cave in and buy the sample kings 60 video. i know that sounds bad but it's not that expensive. the only thing is i have the 60ii so things might work a bit different. and i wonder if the video uses a 60 with the 3.10 OS upgrade.

man, all this time i was hearing that the 60 was easier to use than the 2kxl. i do like the waveform editting on the 2kxl, and the fact that it's got FX, but i'd figure i'd go with the sound/consistency of the 60. once i figure it out i'm sure i'll love it just as much as you guys. and believe me, i will definitely post up some heat after i get going. i've got a GRIP of nice samples to flip. i know the majority of my style will be sample-based but i'd also like to get a keyboard down the road and add some original melodies/basslines etc.

dude I told you how to do that ish on like page 2...maybe slow down and actually try what the people here are telling you to do

edit insert 2 bars...insert before bar 2...blam, 4 bars...looping to bar 1.

use acid pro or sound forge for time stretch

SQUALLAY!

you don't need timestretch, and man do I take issue with saying the 2kXL is more simplistic to use. Never found that, I think this is his first MPC, and those problems would exist with any gear.

You should do what detail said, thenjust mes with the BPM.

And go to Timing correct, and change the TC setting from all the different values and check them out. Get it to 1/8 to hit your loop at the beginning of the sequence, then set the tempo really low, like 60, then listen to the loop, it should finish (depending how long it is) then silence until the sequence loops again, then the loop will start again. Now turn up the tempo and the silence will be less and less, until you get the sample looping nicely.

Man, you were changing the time signature, don't do that!! No reason to initialize sequence, it is so easy to edit and copy or insert to set up your sequence. it is really only needed for time signature changes.

Now, seeing this, you need to READ THE FARKING MANUAL!! like 8 times! Take it to work and read it at lunch, or on your commute if you don't drive to work, or read it at church

you are making it much harder than it is by trying to go to fast, slow down and learn the stuff well.

I don't know the xl just does so many things that the 60 makes you do.
Think about it;
slices the zones for you
calculates the tempo for you on a loop
visual editing that makes you forget to look at the numbers
time compression/expansion
open window button
things like that.
It doesn't mean it's easier to use it means it more simplistic. You can actually do things without having a clue as to what you are doing.
The 60 on the other hand helps you to develope a functional workflow and understanding of the machine.
The 60 is more of a straight forward machine.
The xl does a lot to help a newbe along.

I understand now. I think that is pretty accurate.

me again, ok so i finally got somewhere last night. i had it looping to 4 bars by using the insert bars function and i was able to record a 4 bar sequence. i still need to work on what deta!l was telling me about shifting the melody sample to fit exactly 4 bars and loop properly. the idea is kinda like those shape toys we played with as kids, huh? you gotta make your sample (shape) fit the size of the sequence bars (hole). i'm getting it, slowly but surely. now i need to work on setting up variations (chorus and a bridge) and get them to play in the proper order. you know, like play seq. 1 so many bars, then play seq. 2 for so many bars, then repeat, then seq. 3 for the bridge, and finally one last seq. 1.

and, yes, this is the first MPC i've owned. i've only used acid and cakewalk before with simple pre-looped wav files which were really easy to make repetitive beats with. but now i can freak my own samples and tap out my own drum patterns and create variations which is what i wanted to do all along. now that i finally have real hardware i'm real anxious to start making heaterz right away but i understand i need to read and read and read that manual back 'n forth until i learn HOW the machine actually works to make it do what it do.

thanks for all the insight so far.

i'll make another thread for my next question re: expansion equipment.

oh yeah, do you guys have links to any beats you've made? i'd like to find out if we're on the same page (or at least same book!) in terms of style/genre.

my shit is on the classic golden era tip (finesse/PR/godfather don/large pro/no id/doug infinite etc). of course i listen to lots of different hiphop but i feel these types of producers are among my sampling tastes.

peace.

" I'm flaunting it.
3000, thanks for your brilliant, condescending..."

You flaunt, I condescend. Are we even now?

I am perfectly capable of flaunt and condescention simultaneously myself if you prefer, but I think I should not horde all the deadly sins for myself. :)

Do it man, no will be able to match it!! Might get some discipline in here!!

Remember people shaming is a social tool use to keep people in line ;)

Nah man, I feel where 3000 is comin from most of the time, a lot of cats get peeved when people get lazy with stuff they can find out on google or *gasp!* in the manual.

yo highlife, SLOW THE F U C K DOWN!!! you are already shopping for new stuff when you haven't gotten the basics down on what you just got. Take it easy. To loop your sample properly, you should adjust the BPM like we told you, if you cut the loop too short, then you gotta start over, but changing the BPM will get you perfect loops once you know what you are doing.

And read your manual, 8 times if you have to.

Haha, touche!

3000, I actually do think you're brilliant.........just condescending too :D

Im going to chime in here about something mentioned but passed over very quickly in this post. It is something that has been bothering me for a long time. And that is.......people paying way too much money for MPC's, especially off of ebay. Dont get me wrong MPCs are worth every penny and I love mine and I think everyone should have one, but, on auction sites like ebay the market sets the price. Ive seen unupgraded MPC 60's and MPC 3000 LE's going for ungodly prices. Why? I dont know. As was mentioned in this post, the 3.10 upgrade and SCSI (to a lesser extent) are necessary for the 60. If you dont go the ROUTE 66 way, the upgrade will cost you about four bills, I believe. With that being said, if you pay btw 700 and 800 for the 60 unupgraded you might as well get the 3000 (unless you are dying for 12bit sampling). I guess this is easier said than done though because MPC 3000 LE's go for 2000 and up, Im assuming because they have a fancy paint job? For that you could get the 4000! Smarten up and spend your hard earned money wisely!

Much respect to the two guys on this thread. The guy who bought the MPC 60 for $400 and the other guy who haggled the ebay seller down from his outrageously high price for an unupgraded and blemished (not dissing your MPC) MPC. That is the way you buy!

Rant over.

You ever used a 60 or 3000?

Money isn't everything.
