It only needs "the cloud" to activate/authorize/log in to your account once - if you bought plugins, and that's it. So it's about as standalone as most other "standalone" stuff out there that allows you to purchases additional content from the Internet.

Signing a petition wont help, stop buying their product will can anyone say boycott?

Sort of. The MPC pings the InMusic servers every 90 days, often times a LOT more frequently. If you have Wi-Fi disabled and the machine cannot reach the InMusic servers to verify ownership, you are not allowed to use the plugins you paid for. This has officially been confirmed by Akai.

challenge/response is initiated on each boot and expiry date is extended by roughly 90 days if a licence negotiation is succesful, otherwise in case of let's say wifi being turned off, mpc still uses old file until an expiry date is reached.

On the MPC One you can delete the stock samples by clicking the folder, then shift and then delete. Also the One doesn’t have this authentication problem, it has no wifi, its never asked me to authenticate except once after a firmware update

Perhaps the wifi models are checking its local wifi networks and seeing that they are unfamiliar and then asking to re-authenticate because of it.

Pretty stupid whatever is happening.

Waves are annoying as well, you can only switch “Seats” once a year.

IMHO, it's not the "MPC app" fault but configuration of underlying linux system. Linux deals with two types of clocks: RTC and system clock, usually they're synchronized to each other.
When kernel clock cannot update itself via NTP or similiar services, it takes it value from RTC but it works the other way round as well - when system clock receives NTP it updates RTC immediately so they're stay in sync all the times. I think that when you change the timezone, both clocks go out of sync and trigger plugin authorization.
Now, I'm stepping into fantasy land here as my knowledge of wifi protocols is rather limited but "how does the mpc know you've changed the timezones ?". As far as I understand, it doesn't matter if your wifi adapter is off in your MPC app because it's being initialized and momentairly turned on by linux waaay before the "mpc app" is executed. During initial power on by linux, it receives a lot of "unsolicited" so called, passive beacon frames from surrounding Access Points and all wireless devices where most probably it takes timestamp from - but that is just a wild guess.

Hey fellow MPC-ers I just discovered something awesome kinda, it turns out I will not have the "get em' by the balls" activation issue cause I have no activate plugin option in FW 2.11.0 (Factory Firmware) My plugins just work, no harrassing me about activating them like on my AKAI FORCE!! Maybe AKAI is deliberately leaving the bugs to tricks users into updating and once updated you unwittedly put your "activation balls" in their hands giving them full power over your hardware. I mean you can still use it in other ways, but we shouldn't have to ask daddy (AKAI) if we can go out and play!! (use our units) Especially when you paid good hard earned money for your property (My case: Key 61). So to recap:

PROS:
Factory FW 2.11.0 board does not need plugin activation (no wonder the chat rep was trying to force me to update my unit)

CONS:
Stuck with bugs forever, unless they release such a huge update which is a "must have" then your in the same boat as everyone else, at AKAI'S mercy when it comes to plugins!

Just an FYI if anyone is interested, dont update unless you absolutely have to or you dont mind asking daddy to play outside!!

BTW: I just bought this board about a week ago so I was fortunate enough to get it in factory condition. So I guess this reply is mainly for new owners if the read it before updating!!

Interesting, your firmware version is missing the 'Activate Plugins' menu option. I seem to remember Lampdog having the same 2.11.0 version on his MPC Key and I think that also had the missing activation option.

it's the initial release for key61 as far as I remember correctly, point update went live same day and it had activation enabled

So Akai's claim that there's no regular calling home in standalone would appear to be somewhat 'in doubt' I believe kikgen posted on github that his MPC was also making calls to Google Analytics, despite him disabling 'send anonymous data' in preferences.

Thanks for your message. Our plugin authorization is designed to work entirely seamlessly and offline once you have authorized a purchase; there is no timeout. However we’ve identified an issue related to DST time zone adjustments that can, in rare cases, cause a re-authentication request. We’re working on a fix for this right now.

yeah, Google Analytics is a thing. Another periodic "call home" function contacts Akai auth servers and compare a .xml list of plugins with what it "have on board". If a new / unknown plugin is on that list, your mpc will display a message that there is a new content to be downloaded. Last but not least - "last update check" is stored in mpc.settings file and is in epoch time format.

That stuff could actually be illegal in the EU. I mean, sending stuff to Google Analytics without the user's consent, and not telling the user that their data is being sent to ... Where? The U.S.? If you are a lawyer and want to say it's not like that, go ahead.
