How do I find out the CC number for softsynth in the MPC

I'm using the model D, in the MPC One, but controlling from an external sequencer. How do I find out the CC number for Oscillator 2 Range. I've looked in the Event list, but it just shows the controls name.

Not 100% sure on this but you could try sending midi out to DAW and recording it and seeing what CC got recorded. Stuff like that works with synths in general; haven’t tried this scenario though.

Then we should document it since Air Music / Akai doesn't think people use cc's

I want to create a "device" for my Hapax, so will see if the Hapax Midi Monitor can detect any cc's from the Mini D's knob turns.... This thread would be a good place to document it.

since AKAI refuses to print/document a full MIDI implementation chart, we have to revert to this kind of trickery

From software instruments you usually can‘t send MIDI out, since instrument tracks‘ architecture usually doesn‘t allow that. MIDI in, audio out.

Only way I see is trial and error, if even possible.

Your question makes no sense, since there are no CC implementation for anything in the MPC One.

Use "MIDI learn" in the MPC, with CC sent from whatever sequencer you are using.

Open and Midi track, go to the piano roll view, click velocity, then add new, and add track. Midi CC all there for you to choose. all 128. How is there no Midi CC implementation?

Internal plugins are not controllable directly by CC commands but rather by so called "parameters". These parameters are exposed by the plugins to the mpc ecosystem and then can be "attached" to Midi CC via midi learn and controlled this way, I think that pitch wheel is the only parameter controlled directly via CC.

Isn't this just them using NRPNs though. If I open the VSTi of the MiniD in my sequencer, and use the automation, the "parameter" is listed, but this is just the manufactures choice of NRPN to assign to the synth and the fact that VSTi nowadays communicate the parameter and show that in that sequencer automation lane description rather than the NRPN.

think of your DAW / Sequencer / host as a "translation layer" between plugin itself and midi data that comes from the host track itself or your controller.
those plugin "parameters" that are just api endpoints that are tied directly to certain variables / functions in the plugin code, the way how you control those endpoints is up to your host, there is no direct communication between midi data and plugin parameter variable. If your host doesn't support NRPN or CC or any communication data for that matter you won't be able to control the plugin with that type of communication. Also ,your host "don't know" which midi cc assign to which plugin parameter, hence you have midi learn function.

Now I'm baffled as to why I can't get midi learn to work.

Controller is sending cc 84, Daw is receiving cc84, but Midi learn isn't. If I record some cc84 and try sending it by playing, the MPC receive midi Volume CC first, and switches my target to Track 7 Vol.

I think I need a stylus to draw the MPC automation. I can't get my fat fingers to draw automation correctly, and I'm finding the Q -links and +- button a bit laggy, and buggy, especially after using Undo or forgetting to isolate myself (wear flipflops) from ground.

Connected the controller direct to MPC, set midi channel, press record, turned knob, CC82 received and recorded

Set up Mini D, opened midi learn, set source to Mini D, Target Osc2 Shape, enable mapping, set learn, turned the controller 82, Nowt happens.

preferences --> midi/sync --> select "CONTROL" next to your controller ?
