I have had plenty of them die, never had one smolder though. I moved over to usb and started saving my midi only projects to the internal (they dont use much space at all) I have ssh so i can retreive them later and backups so i can restore the internal back to stock if things go awry. Richies idea is actually not a half bad one tbh. maybe not having the card directly in the unit would be a good move.

Ultros, one has to wonder if there is a design defect with the amount of voltage going into their card readers.

It doesn't makes sense why they'd just melt and I'm not going to suggest you're to blame for using Loblaws branded SD cards either, they still shouldn't melt like that.

Yeah it was strange, i need to find another one and slap it in and see if it warms up or melts too. I could have a faulty card reader, for now i switched to a usb card.

If it was design flaw it would be more prevalent - so far you have a handful of folks, that actually encountered this problem + maybe another bunch like that which never posted about it. Considering there is several thousands of units on the market, fail rate doesn’t even come close to the fail rate of Force units which have a real design flaw that burns its output stage opamps.
It’s just bad luck imho - some peoples winning lottery, some peoples cards go in flames

I doubt its the machines fault tbh... stuff like this happens with my gsx-r its a known issue. The connectors corrode in the wiring hardness and they stop being conductive and become resistive. With resistence comes heat and then eventually burn out. It happens to my stator once a year because i ride in the rain and whatever too. I guess i need to remember to clean the pins and use quality adaptors if im going to use sd or keep my greasy mits off the pin out.

I agree with the majority of your opinion. In the same token, it almost seems safer to use the method I posted previously; sd card extender and perhaps not leave the mpc sitting on the cook top.

It bears repeating that Force does *NOT* have a widespread failure rate regarding the phantom power/output stage preamps. I know it’s a popular sentiment to think that, taking the handful of people who experienced this issue. But a dozen people on FB, here, or otherwise does not make this a thing.

Never said it's a widespread problem but that failrate of mpc cards is nothing compared to failrate of force audio boards which suffered from REAL design flaw.
Audio boards of Force units were revised in late 2019 / early 2020 just because of that problem, however everything with date code 2018/2019 is prone to blow out if you not careful. Furthermore it's not dozens but hundreds of people that had this problem (i know it's still sub 1% failrate), just make a quick google search for "akai force blown audio out" and come back with numbers from reddit, gearslutz, YT and other forums (even this one, i'll bet), and then compare it against search results for broken mpc sd card :)

Right, I do agree that melted SD cards on MPC are far less of an issue than Force audio card issues.

Source?

Force came out in February 2019, correct?

Well of course not - I was just trying to remember when Force came out (which I answered myself). But what is your source for this claim:

Yeah my bad, I guess I took it the wrong way, anyway there was a whole thread regarding this on FB / Akai Force Warranty Voiders should be easy to find. I don’t use FB too much anymore though.
