Support and discussion for all of Akai’s modern standalone MPCs including the MPC X / X SE, MPC Live 1, 2 & 3, MPC One / One+, MPC Key 37/61.

Hi,

MPC Live.

I’m a bit confused.

I have an SSD fitted into the back of my MPC Live. I’m pretty sure that all projects, user data, expansions etc are on the SSD and not the internal drive, however when I check the Drive Free Space pop-up I see the following:

Internal: 349.5 MB free (of 14.4 GB)
MPC SSD: 189.6 GB free (of 232.9 GB)

I have unticked “Hide project data folders” and have looked at every folder in “Internal” with the following results:

Demos - all default and unaltered by me.

Expansions - just the default Clips, Instruments and The Vault 2 - I have not added or deleted anything (although I did do the AKAI provided system reset recently, you know the one they send you a link for if you ask them to)

lost+found - empty directory

MPC Documents - most subfolders (including Projects) are empty.

Splice - empty

Soooo… I’m wondering why my internal drive is running out of space, and what I can do to fix it?

I’m on the latest firmware 2.12.2

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Dan.

The most common place that invisibly fills up is 'MPC Documents > Midi Learn' as there is an ongoing bug that causes the MPC to generate 1000s of midi mapping files - this can happen whenever you try to create your own midi lean mapping. You will not see these mapping files in the browser as they are not a supported file type for it.

I believe it is fine to delete this folder as it should be auto recreated when needed - select it, hold down SHIFT > delete file.

If you do get problems with it missing you can recreate it by going to MENU > SAVE > Project As and on the location selection screen navigate to MPC Documents and hit the New Folder button at the bottom of the screen.

Alternatively, head over to KikGen, install a hacked firmware and empty the folder via SFTP

Okay I tried doing that, was able to successfully delete the MIDI Learn folder, but unfortunately that has made no difference at all to the free space on the internal drive, still the same figures as above.

FYI the MIDI Learn folder had reappeared after a reboot.

Hmm, sunday morning here so cannot think of what else this could be other than things like the splice folder or user saved project data, but it seems like you have checked this already. When you bounce audio it creates a hidden 'exports' folder with a copy of all the audio it bounced, but this should be auto-deleted after a reboot.

Actually, if you performed the Akai library reset it's possible it might be something related to that, perhaps it's somehow added extra content to the expansions or demos folder. Or maybe a hidden folder of supposedly temporary content. Can you give a bit more history on why you needed to do this in the first place?

SSH would be a way of finding out, but I appreciate you might not want to do that.

Appreciate your time and help on a Sunday morning, thanks again!

I bought the unit second hand and it had a whole bunch of expansions on a usb stick which came with it. I wanted to whack an SSD in and basically restore the unit to “box fresh” just so I knew it was vanilla before I started adding things / doing things.

Do you think it would be problematic to delete all the Clips, Instruments, The Vault 2 and then do the Akai restore again? I still have the file I think.

The file restore will bring the machine back to “box fresh”, You don’t have to do anything else, it will do it all for you.

Cheers mate, I'll give it another go, see if it fixes the drive being so full.

Remember to update afterwards and reset prefs after that.
I’d say file restore is a last resort, delete contents of midi learn first is what I’d suggest.

The restoration script akai send is literally just pasting the demos and expansions folders to the internal disk, not sure if it’s a replace or merge operation. If it’s the latter then any additional content added there previously will likely remain in addition to the restored factory stuff.

Generally factory content restoration isn’t something you would need to do unless you are experiencing issues (typically when the previous owner has deleted all factory content). But it doesn’t actually perform a factory reset of your device, all current system files are left untouched

Okay thanks for all the replies folks.

Some feedback on what I did and what the results were, in case it helps anyone else in the future.

I deleted the Demos, Expansions and MPC Documents folders within the Internal drive. This of course freed up all the space on that drive.

I then used a USB stick with the Akai Content Replacement file on it. It automatically replaced all the content I had deleted in the Demos and Expansions folders on the internal, as well as recreated the folder structure.

I did a system preferences reset and all seems to be good now.

My internal drive is reading at 3.8 GB free (of 14.4 GB)

I don’t intend to add anything to the internal drive so let’s see if it stays this way.

Thanks again for all your help and suggestions.

I have less than 18MB (yes MegaBytes) free on my internal drive. ( of 369.7 MB ).
This level is so low, I can no longer record audio within a project.
I have installed an SSD (500 GB). I now use it for all of my project data ( as well as for "temporary file location").
I did not immediately store projects on the SSD file.
I have deleted the MPC Documents folder.
I have also upgraded from 2.x to 3.6.
In trying to solve this problem I have downgraded and upgraded a handful of times.
I have installed the 3.4 version which has the "Secure Sockets Shell".
I can Identify files on the "az01-internal drive, but the total space is < 400 MB.
I have log files from the SSH sessions showing the directories and the space used.
I'm at a loss as to how to free any more space. Is it possible to revert to the factory space allocation for "Internal"???

You shouldn't delete the main folders in the internal drive just the files inside of them. Ask Akai for the recovery file. We are not allow to post it here or anywhere, tho it happens. Go into any other folders & see if there's any files, unless you meant you delete all the internal files.
