Re-ordering Programs for PC Changes

Hi, I'm a long time 1k user (with jjosx) trying to modernize. I bought an MPC One hoping it would streamline my workflow, maybe make things easier and give me some new creative possibilities but so far I'm finding it can't do some basic things that I'm already used to doing with my 1k.

I use my MPC as a live instrument, triggering sounds via external midi notes performed by my drums. Right now on my 1k, I can create as many drum programs as I want and change whatever program change number will recall each program. I can then toggle through programs with a foot controller that sends PC messages that also control various fx pedal settings. Each new part in each song has a different program that I can use for all my gear to switch settings and the MPC to switch programs, and what samples are being triggered, etc.

Is there a way to modify which PC message will recall which programs on these newer MPC's? It seems like the order of programs is fixed to the order they were created. There is no way to rearrange the order or assign their PC change messages. So far it's feeling like the 1000 is a way more capable machine which I did not expect.

you can try changing the PC message from Program to Track in the MPC Prefs and then order your drum programs by track.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it out but unfortunately, there is a little lag when switching tracks this way that won't work for a live performance. Switching programs sounds seamless though. It's super frustrating to find that my MPC that I thought was kinda old and outdated has more of the features that I need than the new ones. I'm not sure what I would get by "upgrading" at this point besides a color touch screen. I don't need or use anything except the drum tracks in the way described above.

You might try some sort of mapping tool between the two devices. I am using a tablet running MIDI-OX to do this, but there are small hardware devices that can do this as well.

The real advantage of the MPCs over your old stuff are the incredible array of effects processors you have on tap. You mention other devices but they may well be irrelevant now.

The simple answer is you can transform any message to any other message and manipulate it however you like.
Start to Program change
Stop to Program Change,
Note to CC,
CC to Note,
CC to 10 CCs,
1 note to 10
Invert values
Rescale values
Step Values
Drop Values
ETC ETC..

For starters you can transform the linear Program Change into any order you desire.

The complex answer is you will be more limited by your imagination than it's capabilities. It doesn't do Sys Ex like other boxes though.

It blew my mind when I actually started tinkering with it. It's like minecraft for midi. It can be used as a simple merger/splitter but then you can program it to fit almost any need. It's usb powered and plug and play

Once it's programmed, plug into the MPC, get 4 more midi in and out ports and a whole ton of processing possibilities. I'm ridiculously preachy about it because I've bought all the other "solution" boxes and all let me down in some way so I'm spreading the gospel to let people know they have options.

Well, I figured out a solution but it’s probably a bit more than anyone wants to do. If you open the .xpj file in a text editor or any coding app, you can manually reorder the listed programs and re-save it, then they will open in that order on the MPC. Not nearly as smooth as just opening the project list and selecting the PC value associated with each program on my 1k. I’m still on the fence about keeping the One.
