USB 3.0 on an MPC One? - Plugins too slow via USB 2.0

My MPC One was great until I installed Akai's pianos etc. Now it takes up to 30 seconds to browse patches i.e. unusable so ...

Did anybody try adding a USB 3.0 port to the vacant slot on the motherboard? This is used for USB 3.0 on the Live II so I am assuming it will be USB 3.0 on the One since the motherboards are virtually the same.

I have the MPC One Retro and buzz off the old color scheme. I would really prefer to keep it.

USB3 doesn‘t help in any way.
Access speed depends on organization of storage (drive memory and controller) of the respective device.
Results may vary hugely.

I disagree. USB 3.0 is 8 x faster access than USB 2.0.

Doesn't matter. It doesn't improve how quickly the plugins load.

I notice too it takes a while for the previews to pop up but once the first few load the rest usually load very quickly for me. This is also on an MPC One Retro.

But of course it does. Plugins loading from a USB 2.0 interface will be 8 x slower than from a USB 3.0 interface. It currently takes 30 seconds to load on my MPC One and is near instant on my MPC KEY 61.

Wouldn't that be more because of the increased RAM on the Key61 & not the type of USB?

Is this 'Stage Pianoi'? Are you referring to scrolling through the various presets, say, in program edit?

I have an MPC One here, no problems loading Stage Piano patches, instantaneous. I've tested with the plugin installed on SD card and USB stick.

It just sounds like your USB disk is failing (back up quick).

I have an MPC One with all the plugins eg piano.
I have an MPC Key with all the plugins eg piano.
The MPC Key has them stored internally i.e. it avoids the bottleneck of USB 2.0.
USB 2.0 is 8 x slower than USB 3.0.
Using USB 3.0 is faster than USB 2.0. Imagine it as a 3L engine vs 2L engine.
The USB 3.0 socket on the "One" is empty. Manufacturers differentiate so they can target different price points etc.
My plan is to add the missing socket and have a 1GB SSD on the "One" working 8 x faster.

Interesting. I'm changing Fabric Pianos in the Sounds browser. Mine take forever. This makes me think my Sandisk SD card is fake. What model of SD card / USB stick are you using?

I will still add an internal SSD I think.

Okay I've just bought an MPC Live II. Should be here tomorrow. It's USB 3.0 so I'll compare them.

Okay, just tried Fabric piano (MPC One, 2.12.3). With a sandisk USB 3.0 stick, taking approx 3 seconds to load each patch. SD card (sandisk extreme class 10) taking around 8 seconds, integral 512GB ultima pro microSD taking around 10 seconds.

Just tried the same on my MPC Live (be aware this is still currently running 2.11.x), and same USB 3.0 stick giving similar load times to the One, despite the USB 3 port. Sandisk extreme SD card around 3 seconds. Some patches are instantaneous as they are using the same samples, or there might be a cache for some stuff.

30 seconds definitely very long, so as you say, perhaps fake card or faulty. MPC Live is quicker than the MPC One for the SD card stuff, but this could be due to me running 2.11 on it. I will update later and re-test.

worth remembering that the MPC file browser is very slow at loading individual samples (noticeable when loading programs containing 100+ samples), even when using an SSD (a drum program containing 100 x 1MB samples takes significantly longer to load than a drum program containing one 100MB sample), so it's possible that the plugin system is also poor in this respect, so disk speed (and bus speed) may not be the only factors in this. Although plugins use a single content 'BIG' file, so perhaps this avoids that particular bottleneck.

Yes some patches are instant if others have previously been loaded.

Have you got a fast high end USB 3 SSD you can stick in to each? That will answer the question of whether the surgery is necessary. Of course it is possible for a USB Stick to be the same in both USB 2 and 3 as it also depends upon the stick.
