Facebook Research's Demucs, which is Stemroller's backend is already the processor for quite a few free web stem separation services. I know this because, when they don't degrade the quality, I get exactly the same files as Stemroller, to the bit !

If Akai's integration also uses Alexandre Défossez's Demucs (forked from Facebook Research since he left Meta), then it isn't bad at all - Stemroller served me well last night to untangle a voice & guitar recording from a friend who couldn't be arsed to record them separately on her phone !

I still have Regroover Pro from the now-defunct Accusonus. They were bought out by Meta a year or so back (and abandoned all their customers in the process - no warning that you needed to fully activate any products of theirs you may have purchased. I lost access to another plugin in the process. Really shitty practice).

RP is still a powerful and flexible stem extraction tool though. I wonder if their algorithms are powering these products?

I never had a 2k, but I can only imagine. Had the S2000 around 2000/2001 though. Still use my E6400 regularly. Oh man, that shits fun. I go do housework while I wait for it to do anything in the processing menus hahaha. I try to do everything I can to prep the stuff on the computer beforehand, and then sample it in nowadays.

It will work with the mpc software hence it will work with any currently supported mpc controller. You don’t mention which mpc studio model you have, you might not have all the features available directly from the hardware so you might need to use the software directly for some things

Okay, thank's for you answer. I have the MPC Studio II.

So the Studio 2 is currently supported as an MPC Software controller, but I can't remember if it gives you hardware control of SAMPLE EDIT > PROCESS (which is where the stems option begins), and if it does, whether they will give you hardware control of the stem options on that page as the Studio 2 is really only partially integrated (compared to something like the One or Live, which allow you to control everything entirely from the hardware).

sorry to be "that guy" but i'm totally unintrigued by this stems stuff. i tried a couple of apps for it just out of curiosity, the results were usually horrible. in the andy mac video it sounded way better than anything i tested, but then i watched tubedigga's tests and it's clear that andy mac chose tracks that were 100% unproblematic for the official demo... it still sounds bad on the average song , especially if its an old song.
but the quality aside, its a technology that really doesn't inspire me at all. i think the creativity in dissecting samples was one of the keys of the coolness of sample based music, hip hop instrumentals in particular.
this tech will probably create even more conformism in music. this confirms that the road the current mpc line is going is not my cup of tea, we will have stems while we don't have basic stuff like clear and easy time signature per sequence, different options for next sequence, better sustain loop features, step recording etc... plus the bugs.

Malo sampled a bunch of vinyl records

He wasn’t going to say anything negative in the video anyway though

Accurate , Tube, and someone else mentioned it sounding blah on certain sounds/bad song files

It’s Akai so we know it won’t be amazing top of the line quality. But useable enough if you use it in the right context similar to warp is my guess

We don’t have step recording?

I’m a bit old school myself so don’t use stem technology much. It has its place in my workflow but it’s just a tool when needed. I don’t apply it to every beat (like many will with this). I’ll happily pay $10 for another tool in my belt though

lol

This stems thing is opening up hip hop sampling so much that it's going to see a resurgence from its height of the 90s. I am able to go back into musical history and literally sample anything without worrying about vocals being over it.

I was able to take the Average White Band song "Reach Out" and made ten complete bangers that were literally not possible without stem separation technology. This is crazy talk. Enjoy the past I guess.

I swear some people who win the lottery would complain how heavy the money bags are.

Man please, ain't nobody got time for that!

This is an optional paid plugin & even if you buy it you don't have to use it on every sample. The point of sampling in Hip-Hop isn't to prove how technical advanced you are, it about using the tools & materials around you to make something new & funky for people to party to. They used certain parts of a song like the drum break so the didn't have to hear the vocals, but you know there was part of that song they would've love to use but it had other undesired elements that couldn't be removed w/o messing up the elements they wanted. If the pioneers of Hip-Hop had Stem tech back in the 70s they would've use it.

This isn't going to create any more conformism than what already exists & why just focus on how the copycats will use it & not the more creative types? That's limited thinking on your part. This tech could & will open up so many new things on the MPC. It not like Akai just invented Stems its been out & DJs love it & there's no extra conformism there. They still gotta be creative & pick unique materials to use this technology on.

Basically Akai give us a technology that greatly opens up more thing to sample like documentaries, interviews, movies, those cool Alan Watt's YouTube videos with that annoying music over it  but this ain't your cup of tea?

Yes Akai should fix its bugs, but until than, you can use stems for $10 if like while you're waiting. Cool :smoker:
By HouseWithoutMouse Sun Jan 14, 2024 7:33 am
They won't have time to fix bugs, because there's the next optional $10 thing to make.

I've been separating stems quite happily without knowing that I should have some Akai thing to make it possible. I must have done it all wrong.

Your point would be valuable if you were separating stems on the MPC standalone directly before this update that will give MPC & hopefully Force owner that capability without using a 3rd party plug on a computer.

The way you are doing it now isn't wrong & nobody said it was, so that's a useless argument, but if you could make stems on the unit itself, doing it your current way may feel wrong when you don't have to.

Man is complaining about a feature that he uses a PC for coming to the MPC for cost a dime-bag...wow first world bs!

just cos u dont like it does not mean u need to demonise it; many people would find that this feature will further open up more lanes of creativity
