I just discovered FutureMusic magazine...

If you haven't heard of this mag, go check it out. It's a UK electronic music mag with articles on just about anything you can think of, and EVERY issue comes with a sample CD. I just bought the Jauary 2005 issue for about $14.00, and it came with 806 "copyright-free" samples.

yes, its a good magazine to read especially if u started from nothing....if you are experienced in the game it might not be as appealing to you. But since i'm a rookie, it does me just fine, plus those sample cds are good starting tools when ti comes to dropping beats.
next paycheck i will cop that new january issue

Yeah, its a good mag in a slightly trashy sort of way. As someone pointed out the other day, you will never read a bad review in there so you have to take their words with a pinch of salt.

Another great and VERY Pro UK magazine is Sound on Sound (www.sospubs.co.uk). You can even subscribe to this electronically for very little. This enables you to read recent articles from the paper mag but eventually these also become public (maybe 6 months or so).

I've been subscribing to Future Music and Computer Music (A hell of a lot better mag than FM) for 3 years now.

Sound on Sound a great mag for gear info & reviews.
Digital Music Maker is Outstanding mag for Newbies.
Only bad thing these magazines can be come a $80.00 a month habit real easy.

future music should really be combined with CM as it is far too pc-orientated...and says nothing new....yeah dont belive the FM hype either- no really, dont! stopped reading it ages ago

Future Music... OMG.

I can see how it's OK for beginners, so if you like it, that's cool. But:

- It's very gear-minded. Even though they take every opportunity to say "it's not about the gear, it's what you do with it", the rest of the mag speaks the opposite. Don't let them make you feel you need more gear.
- The reviews aren't very good. Some are biased. Take them with a pinch of salt. And there was this hilarious incident when they found out one of their writers was _literally_ copying SoS gear reviews. They sacked him.
- It's crazy expensive. So what if there's a CD with samples you'll never use and software demo's you can download anyway? I have to say, I hate sample CDs. I wasted so much time getting a great sample library together before I figured out that all you really need is tons of vinyl!
- The whole mag looks and reads like it was made by 16 year olds.

But I'll admit, I too read FM when I was just starting out (1996), but I grew out of it and switched to SoS, which I only recently stopped buying because 90% of it is no longer relevant to what I do. It's mostly about recording bands, which I don't do. And after 5 years, every compression/reverb/EQ/home mastering/accoustics/mic placement worshop or tutorial they do is pretty much the same.

btw, another set ill be sticking in the bin are the ones that arrived today on the March issue. They might of interest to some of you guys as there are 500 Sugar Coated R&B / Hip Hop samples on there including "construction kits for that Neptunes style R&B pop sound".

Yo the Neps are hot ! They got skills, yes they do make maybe too much pop, but when the did Hot Damn, that was fire and when they did FRontin that was fire!
