Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

Howdy, just bought a busted 2000 (thinking it doable but then found out the schematics don't exist online).

The panel board seems to be missing the reset line from the main CPU board. That's my assumption so far.

There's a myriad of other failures that need further investigation. I've made some progress based on old experience.

I've been looking at the 2000XL schematic. But the original 2000 Classic would most definitely make things easier...

Does anybody have a copy?

Cheers from Iceland.

Do not waste your time with it. Mpc2000 service manual floating around is "mutilated" and full service manual is nowhere available, even paying for it.
Mainboard is not reliable at all. I suggest you to catch up one working unit or a working mainboard (from a trusted tech).
Having serviced several synths and samplers, I'd put this one with the Ensoniqs in terms of servicing. The sound very good but are a PITA once they fail, full of bugs and so on.

Thanks for the reply. I used the S2000 service manual and the 2000XL one as a "crutch" through the repair.

Managed to fix the MPC 2000, it was a myriad of things. The last thing I found was a open fusible link on the converter board which made the MPC freeze up when entering Sampling mode ;)

Congrats on your success!

I have two faulty mainboards on my basement:

- One is "almost" booting, once it starts loading the OS it stops on sector 8. It was booting -sometimes- but messing around the CPU oscillator I was not able to boot it again; nevertheless sampling was not working at all before.

- The other one is only giving me blank display, even changed the boot eprom, no success. I believe it has to do with the display data lines as it seems the system performs some check routine before booting and display it is mandatory for the machine to actually start booting.

I, unfortunately, have no time to troubleshoot them in depth so just waiting to catch one working online, but prices are outrageous these days, no way I will pay 600€ for a unit...

You found a S2000 service manual? , I never saw it before, did you pay for it?.

Cheers

I am in the same boat with mine atm.
changed scsi fuse with no luck.
When I try to select scsi the machine jams in waiting mode and cannot get passed that point.
Simce purchased an xl and a 4000 where both zip drive + disks open fine on those.
Annoying because everything else works fine but starting to lose hope with it :(

What kind of SCSI drive are you trying to talk to?

I am wondering if it might help to fit a new internal scsi connector?
One thing I did notice when turning the machine on without boot disk each time the machine shows a different scsi ID. I am not sure if this is significant? would a new boot chip help? Really lost with this as everything else works fine and seems a waste to chuck a machine out with this issue

The internal SCSI connector? I don't remember a 2000 having an internal SCSI connector, just a floppy drive. But you are using external drives right? If so, the internal SCSI connector has nothing to do with it.

It cycles SCSI ID's every time you turn on the 2000. If you eject the boot disk, you'll actually see the 2000 cycling through all the SCSI ID's trying to find a drive with the OS on it, which is normal.

The BOOT ROM you're talking about would only help provided that there is corruption on the ROM chip. But since you're able to boot up without SCSI devices connected, that doesn't tell me the boot ROM is the issue at all.

As for throwing the machine out, you'd be a dummy if you did that.

Thanks for your reply.
That makes a lot of sense regarding boot rom so good to eliminate that.
When booting up the MPC mind it only shows 1 id and does not cycle through the scsi id’s
I just meant the internal scsi port perhaps is faulty from years of use? Wishful thinking perhaps?

I was only joking about throwing it out. I have a deep affection for this and has been used on recordings and live gigs, however it’s use right now is well…useless.

Just to clarify - when you're booting up the 2000 with no disk installed and watching the screen to see it cycle through SCSI ID's - do you in fact have a SCSI device connected and on when it's doing this?

If so, disconnect whatever SCSI stuff you have and let me know what you see then. If everything's disconnected and you only see it going from 0 to 1 then something's a bit off with that because my 2000 will cycle I believe from 0 to 7 before it loops back.

If you want, send me $1500 and I'll fly over there and have a look at your 2000 for you. I'll even sign a few autographs.

Apply richie suggestion first, it should actually cycle thru scsi id..

Do you have any termination on your scsi chain (typically if your driver has 2 ports for daisy chain) ? does your iomega driver has Two switches at the back (models varies) ? one for termination (and you want to set it to 1) and scsi # selector (usually 5/6) put it to 5 even if it's not ideal.

in all case you make these relics working, do yourself a favor and try to to get a zuluscsi mini or something comparable. Iomega ZIP were notoriously known to be unreliable. sd/cf are the way to go.

Even if you survive it this time, next to experience is the click of death :-)

is it a zip100s or zip100s2 (the newest) ? if i remember the first one couln't boot the os, where the second yes.
