Yes that's definitely a nice option for rr/vs combos as you would be using the tracks themselves to control the velocity triggering, leaving the programs to deal with only the round robins.

However organic seems to be suggesting that it's possible to create a single instrument that can achieve the rr/velocity combination independently, without the need for specific project/track configuration. That is, a single program that when loaded into any virgin project, will immediately provide the mix of rr and velocity on each note in that program.

The whole point of this forum is about sharing knowledge. If you've solved this issue please share it.

So what we need is the ability to trigger different sets of round robins depending on the velocity you hit the pad, all contained within a single program. For example, if I hit a note at a velocity of 27 it plays a random sample from a pool of low velocity round robins. If I then trigger the same note at a velocity of 120 it will trigger a sample from a completely different pool of 'hard' round robins.

To my knowledge, any pad that is set to play a cycle/rand is triggered over the entire velocity range, any velocity ranges you set on those round robin keygroups are ignored. So how can we 'target' specific sets of round robins based purely on the velocity we trigger a note?
I've just checked and the Track MIDI Filter by Velocity setting also works for pads, so you can set these and the Send To field to get round robbin on multlayer keygroups.

(Rewriten with slightly more detailed instructions, it didn't let me edit previous post.)

In Track List MIDI Filter settings you can set a Velocity range a Track responds to, so you can set Velocity there for your 7 Note On groups and use Send To in Track Mixer section of Main to forward to all these layers plus your Note Off layer(s), all triggered from the initial track in the chain.
Nice one.

Then you understod me wrong. I never claimed keygroup, but keygroups. Samantics? Maybe, but I have seen this question before, and your answer is always no. But thats incorrect . kazakore got it. Sending everything to a subgroup makes it more easy to manage the volume of the instrument. I find a fresh channel when recording also better.
I doubt Akai will update the keygroup option so we can use only one channel, but maybe an option to combine multiple channels somehow. Because to open a instrument with many velocity layers can take some time, depending on how many layers. If the project is not a template.

Yes, I have many instruments. With different articulations, where you switch between, for exeample, ch 1-4 normal, glide, vibrato and so on. Its a shame you cant keep the switch track view window up, If that was the case, you could be flying.
Some instruments are not for the 2gbit platform, but the 4gbit, unless you choose only one articulation.
All of them use rr and velocity layers, some with more velocity layers than others. But the rr cant be more than 4, as far as I can tell.

The track velocity option is definitely a workable solution if you are happy to also set up your projects accordingly. not so great if there's any hope of selling this commercially as most end users would be expecting it packaged into a single instrument. Perhaps it could be sold as a complete project template.

But the next time someone asks about ways to mix rr & vs I'll point them to this topic, it's a great workaround.

Force users can also use the envelope follower combined with round robin sample chains (as per my previous post) as that can continually generate random slice values in real time. I guess you could also mimic this in an MPC by recording slice rapidly changing slice automation.
