newbie asks - what are multis and parts?

Alright, here goes.

Had my first session with my mpc4k last night. just going through the manual and getting to know my new weapon of choice.

I am stuck on the multis and parts bit. I mean i have a very rough understanding what these terms mean, but still i am confused.

I know what programs are because I have been using a mpc2k for 5 years now. And I understand that the mpc4k can now have key programs as well as drum prgrams as it has a fully blown sampler underneath its bonnet.

But when it comes to multis and parts - i am a bit lost. reading the manual hasn't helped me enough in understanding these concepts.

Would anyone be willing to explain them both to me in a straight forward, simple manner.

A multi is just a collection of up to 127 programs,
all with their own level, panning, FX send, and MIDI receive channel settings.

Each of those 127 programs and their settings is reffered to as a "part" of the Multi....

Simple?

i understand multi rules over all, but what is a program?? is it sequences?

are you for real?

a program is that file you load which keeps the information of which sound to play when you hit a pad and all that ish

so should you always assign one program to one individual part in a multi?

e.g.

rhodes program to part 1
synth bass program to part 2
808 drums program to part3

...and so on

or do you ever have more than one program to a part?

You could assign the same program to all 127 parts of a multi!
(if you really wanted to )

Why would you want to?
Well, each part can have a different volume level, pan direction,
MIDI receive channel, FX setting, etc etc

For instance, I've done gigs where a couple of us had MIDI controller keyboards both plugged into the MPC4000.
My keyboard was sending on (let's say) MIDI channel 10,
the other keyboard player was sending on MIDI channel 11.

One of the parts in the current Multi is listening on channel 10,
another part is listening on channel 11.

Both channels could have the same program in them (say it was an Hammon organ sound).
But my part would have nasty distortion and phasing FX on it
the other part could be the same Hammond sound, but with loads of reverb FX.
One could be panned a bit stage left, the other stage right....
