MPC Key 37 high pitched noise issue when pad lights are on

MPC Key 37 high pitched noise issue when pad lights are on

Hi All! First post but long time user of MPC's in various guises :)

Just picked up a new MPC Key 37 and noticing a high pitched whining noise from the unit (not the outputs - from the actual unit itself) when the pad lights are lit. Noise gets louder the closer I put my ear to the unit - right hand side seems loudest. Turning the lights off eliminates the sound altogether, though this is sadly not possible to do when using plugins :/

Can someone confirm if this is normal for this unit? I have a MPC Live here with no such issues and can't say I noticed it on the MPC One+ I had for a while.

It's worth mentioning that I do have bat-like hearing so appreciate that some may not hear it at all, but would really like to know if it's just mine.

I bought it 'new' but noticed that the packaging was not sealed and there were fingerprints on the screen (and no screen protector) which is already making me paranoid so I want to test the crap out of it before I accept it.

I know, I know but I bloody love this thing! Who knew adding a keyboard would make an MPC even more sexy?! :-D

If it's the same for all units, I can live with it and hope for a firmware fix where we can at least turn off the pad lights globally.

If it's just mine, hell yeah it's going back!

It's from a large UK online retailer so they have to take it back due to UK distance selling consumer law if I don't want it (got 30 days from receipt to reject it).

Not going to name and shame them as it *may* have just been a genuine mistake and they accidentally sent out a return unit :hmmm: . It looks and feels brand new otherwise, but yeah - disappointing nonetheless.

That's interesting. I mean, the FW is up to date and I can hear the noise when nothing else is plugged in / moved to another area of the house / different socket, etc

I also tried my MPC Live power supply but getting the same noise at the same pitch.

May try the Akai support today and try and get down to local shop to have a listen to a display model, though I may look a bit weird bending over pressing my ear to the MPC :lol:

Though about a 61 for ages but the size of the 37 is perfect for me so I knew I had to get one.

Also I actually really like the red! Yes, I'm the one :-D

OK - so I lied. THIS is the final update on this one.

After getting a brand spanking new replacement, sealed box, screen protector, etc I can still hear this high pitched noise when the pad lights are lit. I'll raise with Akai but just in case anyone else has noticed it, I can confirm it appears to be 'normal' at this point.

Also getting crazy crackling on both units when in controller mode and using the MPC Key 37 ASIO (not happening with my MPC Live with the exact same setup), but that's a different thread!

I had the same crackling with the One+ in controller mode. Mpc One and Live don’t do it on same computer. I reported it to Akai but they didn’t seem to care

My mpc one does this and always has. I can stop it by holding the headphone plug off to left a bit which makes me think: in my case the 3.55mm jack is faulty.

It kinda has this digital zzzzzzz to it like a soft grain. The main outputs off the back of the device are crystal clear though so I really dont worry about it much. It's doesn't end up in the track renders so thats good enough for me.

One day I will open it up and fix it, probably a matter of bending some metal to seat the headphones a little better. One good yank and it will be back to buzzing though.
