Realistic bass guitar sounds - help

Absolutely right
A real bass offers so much more expression, in particular damping and muting notes... which is essential, but very hard to translate to samplers.
I‘m a big fan of the classic p-bass type (split coil pickup, 1 volume, 1 tone), the most simple but extremely versatile bass.
While one can spend a fortune on vintage instruments, there‘s no need to: just check some modern cheapos. They vary a lot, even the exact same model.
Don‘t pay much attention to „sound“, but to the reaction of the bass, how it resonates, that‘s where it‘s at, similar to an 808 with long decay...

Applies to all guitars too. We can have an excellent picked notes multisample, another one with slap notes, yet another one with bent notes, etc. - but a guitar or bass track has all those on the same track... And that is not even taking into account the slides or even the percussive sounds of an acoustic guitar. A track with just my favourite slap bass Fabric patch sounds nice but it just doesn't ressemble an actual bass player. Maybe a luxury MPC bass patch could use sample layers to offer four different ways of striking the string.
