CD ROM to Compact Flash Transfer

I installed an Addonics Compact Flash reader in my MPC2000xl and I would like to transfer the sounds and programs from the Akai CD-ROM Sound Library MPC2000xl Vol. 1 (the original factory CD-ROMj onto a compact flash card. When the sounds and programs are written to the card, the MPC abbreviates some of the names. Then, when I load the programs, the MPC says some of the sounds can’t be found because it is looking for the original unabbreviated name.

I have approached this several different ways: formatting the card from the MPC, formatting the card from my Mac, loading the sounds through a SCSI bridge instead of via the ATAPI port, and even loading all of the programs from the CD-ROM into the MPC and then writing the programs from the MPC to the compact flash directly. No matter how I do it, I get the same result: the MPC can’t find the sounds with names longer than 8 characters.

So I figured out there is no way around the 8 character limit when dealing with the CF card. But why can the MPC load files with longer files from CD~ROM? If I were to buy a zuluSCSI, and use in on SCSI ID0 as a virtual CD~ROM, would everything load as normal, or would the 8 character limit still be a problem?

Akai FAT is not really MSDos FAT. They have customised the filesystem slightly. So as you can see you can have file name longer than 8 chars IN the MPC. but when mounted on the PC/MAC, because it believes to be FAT (read here MSdos FAT), they get truncated, and a lot of problem starts from there.

From your computer, the 8 chars limit for FAT will always be there. the AKAI FAT has never been standardised...

Search around in this forum, this has been largely documented, and you will also find some tools names to "convert" things, if you really want to have them accessible from your mac.

I’m just trying to transfer the .pgm files and associated .wav files from the CD-ROM onto a Compact Flash card so I don’t have to load them from an external CD drive anymore. I think I’ve realized that there simply is no way, unless maybe the zuluSCSI will work when set to SCSI ID0 where it is supposed to mimic a CD drive.

I thought maybe a workaround would be to load the program, then rename the sounds before saving. However, that would not actually work because many programs use the same sounds. So, if I rename it on one program, the next program still won’t be able to find the sounds because it will still be looking for the original name.

Just kind of odd that Akai would have a naming scheme for CD-ROMs that is not compatible with the naming scheme of other drives on the same system

you akai cdrom is akai formated. you are trying to manually move them around from within you PC/MAC to the CF card, and this is precisely as explain where your problem start.

with the zulu it will work, just do a bit to bit copy from your cd to an virtual image file CD0.iso , and mount it in the mpc2KXL, it will appear like it is was a cd-rom

i can confirm it works with zulu scsi,
as i bought one and the seller was able to write (preinstall) akai sample cd s as iso file on the card.
(as mentioned before, as cd0.iso fe. )
