Has anyone used a Live 2, on a plane?

I know I cant be the only one who wants to do this, but who has actually tried?

Going on a super long flight and know I would be able to kill lots of time if I brought the Live 2. But i'm wondering how annoying/big it might be in actual use? Any experiences?

I’ve done it several times with the OG live. But only if the seat next to me wasn’t taken. Too weird to be banging out beats when you’re banging elbows with a stranger

An Android tablet, iPad Pro, or a Surface Tablet has always scratched the itch on domestic and international flights. I just have too much other stuff to carry to even entertain the idea of hauling a MPC sized object on a plane. Even the One is too big for me.

Tablets are also more discrete and you can always save the MIDI out or record all tracks at once into the MPC. If a took a Surface with me, I could just use the MPC Software.

If you do it, make sure you’re not packed in tight with other passengers. I’m sure you’ll draw some attention and people looking over your shoulder.

You’ll have better inflight charging opportunities if you need them on a tablet. I go for the less attention route. Less questions at customs. Easier to take out and put back at security checkpoints. Just a lower hassle set up.

Brought my Live in carry on luggage on all continents except south America so far.
The usage on the plane depends on the carrier. Had some trouble with Garuda Indonesia and Swiss air which refused the use of the mpc while flying, but the majority of the crew didn't care at all. Be prepared for "oh, so you're a dj" at security checks in most 2nd and 3rd world countries^^

Used a 500 on a plane multiple times. Never had problems with security, they don’t even care, but still waiting for that one dickhead agent making a fuss about the MP, so I fly with the iPad nowadays. Can do more with the iPad and takes up less space anyway, so easy choice.

Pad banging is recommended to be avoided, gently tapping like typing is the way to go. Wait til that obnoxious white chick starts doing her yoga stretches in the aisle, after that anything goes and nothing will look weird anymore. Including you padbanging and headbanging the shit out of the Live.

Many times. I always carry mine in my carry on with a Decksaver on top, sitting right on top of all my clothes so it can be opened and the TSA can see it easily. As it's always in my carry-on (on wheels), its size and weight has never been an issue for plane travel.

I've sat it on the tray in front of me sometimes (like the Cooking Soul video above), but I keep my finger drumming "gentle" since it does wobble the tray a bit, and I know the person in front of me would be annoyed (hell - I'd be annoyed)! I'll put it in my lap when I really want to get down and dirty. I always use my cans, because being the passenger with your speaker blaring is being a total ass, and I try to be respectful of my fellow passengers. I always fly business class or coach (I'm cheap like that, but my business flights are almost always under 3 hours one-way).

Live II was made for travel. Do it!

Out of interest, how many of you MPC Live players, play it while you sit on the bog. Go on, be honest?

There was this one flight where an old lady was sitting next to me and completely intrigued with what I was doing. I ended up giving her a mini-lesson and creating a 4 bar sequence. She was blown away that we could write music like that. Then there was a red-eye I took back from a Vegas weekend and the guy sitting next to me - politely - asked if I would turn off my MPC because the screen was keeping him up and he had a funeral to attend the next day. D’oh!

Planes are super noisy and as long as you're not flailing around it's not likely to be too big of a problem.

I would say though, be polite, and pay attention to your surroundings. It's super easy to put on headphones and zone in and forget about everybody around us... it doesn't hurt to ask the person beside you if they are okay with you hitting the pads, or let them know if it bothers them it is okay to ask you to stop. Not everybody is comfortable interrupting somebody, especially when they have no idea what you're doing or why you're making all those stank faces.

Biggest thing I'd avoid is using the tray as a stand... use it on your lap so your tapping isn't transferred to the person in front of you...

Other than that... safe passage!

I always have this conversation with my seat-mates prior to taking it out of my carry-on. I'd hate to be "that guy" and it enrages me when people on planes think they are the most important thing in the world.
