Yes that's fair enough, I can see that being useful. The workaround is to hit undo at the end of the first pass, although this will delete everything you just recorded rather than gradually deleting as you move through the second pass. But if the aim is to not break the flow, and you just want to record the whole track again, this seems like a reasonable way to do it in the meantime.

Damn I didn’t know he was still around making vids.

Reasonable is one thing, fun is another. And what if I want a blend of the last half of the first pass and the first half of the second? But i guess we’ll just have to make do

It'd be great to record eg keys and vocal each on separate stereo tracks.

Or use it as the place to record three people jamming on three devices.

Also, when are they sending out links, did I miss an email?

You can already do this in mpc2

Another option would be to just record everything, all passes, because why record over or throw away anything until you've had a chance to listen back to everything? You might miss something really special. Two methods, both of which keep the flow going and don't require you to stop playing:

Turn off seq 'LOOP' and on your guide track, set the track itself to loop, say, over 4 bars.
Hit RECORD and record your performance on the second track for as many bars as you need. As the main sequence loop is off, everything you play will be recorded with bars added as required while the main track just loops over the same 4 bars. Listen back, pick the best bit(s), copy over the main 4 bars.

Or, just hit PLAY and just jam away with track 2 selected for as long as you want (can leave loop on with this one) . At the end, hit retrospective record and all data stored in the 'unused/hidden' portion of the sequence, which you can reveal by temporarily extending seq 'bars'. This method doesn't use timing correct so would have to apply afterwards, if you desire.

But I can log a feature suggestion for the option to disable overdub, can you give me an example of an app that does this so Akai can see it in action?

What db909 wants was standard on the old ensoniq esq-1 & eps synth / samplers:
while the seq. was looping one could add /stuff to the seq. til satisfaction set in.

So this is an incremental overwrite? I.e. after looping (say 4 bar seq) it goes back to the start and begins progressively overwriting the existing events, but if you press STOP after 3 bars, the 4th bar is left as per the previous pass?

exactly - after you pressed stop it asked wether you want to keep the changes or not - was quite nifty for the late 80ies.

Oh great thanks. Anyone know the record time limit?

the amount of unused MPC RAM is the limit - for a single audio stereo file it's about 5 mins, iirc
edit: if 3.x would support sampling to disk, the RAM amount wouldn't matter anymore, cause playing back samples / audio from disk is supported finally in 3.x

Maybe we’re making this too complicated. The pieces of what I want are already working exactly as they should, just inhibited by the automatic engaging of overdub at the end of a loop. The actual workaround for this would be to simply hit record again at the exact precise moment in time at the end of a loop. But that timing rarely works out. Everything else already works exactly as I would want it. It’s just inhibited the auto overdub. So there’s no need for examples, that just complicates things. It’s literally all there right now, simply made next to impossible

well, direct to disk sampling would be the logical progression in a future 3.x version

Haha sorry not familiar with the history, but I assume 3.0 doesn't support direct to disk sampling, so it's a flat 5 minutes? Or is this fact just unknown at the moment?

I'd really love a hardware device that could multitrack record long jams in a box with some ok effects and other fun features. Tp7 is just a costly recorder and nothing more, with no screen. 1010 bluebox is the closest but it's a real dead end with no usb audio or usb file access, _and_ no features other than mix and record. Keen to hear any ideas!
