I didn’t realize this was a new video I thought it was the same one. So is he saying that the old song mode will stay the same and the arranger view will be a different view of this old song mode and that you can record full length audio tracks over the multiple sequences that make up the song?

That's the holy grail of standalone! Please be true.

Is that better on 3?
Any chance we have shareable templates for midi controllers?
I gave it away for now but still use my global template.

Guess theae questions should go dirctly to akai.

Do you mean the launch control. I only use it of synths, and I have a big 3 bank 96 routing to the OPX4 and it's never crashed on me.

I'm still on Version 2 software, so I wonder if they've sorted anything since you got rid of yours.

Hi,

i just encountered the same crash.
It was when I tried to use the channel Volume (CC 7) on my Bass Station 2.
I used the midi CC screen on program edit when on a midi track.
Same behaviour, the Buttons get unresonisve and I have a light show.
Same happend with the lauch control.
Can someone test that on mpc 3?

i disabled "local on" on the BS2 and switched from din mid to USB.
Even disabling the control in on the BS2 USB MIdi did not work

So you were sending mid cc7 from the launch control, to the MPC via USB, then the Bass station was hooked up to receive CC7? Was the basstation connected via Midi 5 din cable, did it have both ins and out connected to the MPC, or was it connected with USB? Did you send midi CC7 from the bass stations Volume pot?

yesterday i did that wihout the lauchcontrol, just the midi CC via the MPC.
I tried both, din midi and USB Midi.
DIN Midi was connected with both cables.
I turned the input from the BS2 in its USB Interface settings off.

So if you only connect the bass station with just a midi in cable and no midi out so it only receives midi, does it still happen?

If it does, then I am thinking you have a midi loop going on, where the cc7 is looping around and around, back and fourth from the MPC to the Bass station.
If it doesn't, then you know the fact it's a bass station is irrelevant, as a midi cable unlike a USB don't know what it's sending to.

I'd be lying if I said my enthusiasm for it now is the same as when they announced. I mean, it doesn't matter because I'm gonna download it when it becomes available anyway. I probably should've never got 'excited' in the first place lol.

They delay the public beta because they are still ironing bugs out + the track mutes thing will be solved by then.

I have a bit more criticism to do about the live situation of things, especially if you have multiple sequences with different songs each but I will keep it for after the release.

Its moving from multiple songs in a project to one song in a project. Better for song writing, bad for playing live sets.

Maybe depends what a 'song' is to the individual?

For me, each sequence is a song. Generally 8 bars, with different tracks being variations on a progression/idea or section. ie Bass is track 1, Bass More is 2, Bass Most is 3.

Track Mutes allow me to move around the sequence freely bringing parts in and out, having an intro/verse/chorus/breakdown type experience...or whatever i'm feeling at the time

I play live on the MPC, Track Mutes are vital.

The new 'Track is the Program' system will mostly work me (as long as we do get the recently promised track mutes) because each sequence is mostly laid out the same track wise. Eg, my top row of tracks, 13-16 is always Kick / Clap-Snare/ CL Hats / OP hats. Within those programs I have a selection of sounds to suit the sequence. Maybe only four different kicks, but my clap, hats and percussion programs have 16+ varying samples assigned across the pads.

In MPC3, that should largely work out the same for the first 16 tracks, cos that always laid out the same for me, however 17 up, thats the less standised area that I'll probably need to straighten out.

Have a great day.

2 things I'm curious about MPC 3.
1) Does external hardware still work on the new firmware? I'm looking at the Behringer XR 18
2) Since clip mode is removed? How would I play back longer samples? Is this done in the drum track?

MPC-Tutor wrote:The arranger has no real bearing on a project containing many individual sequences as the arranger is just an alternate way of managing a single sequence. What they need to work on is improving song mode, which is what the 'arranger' should have been IMO, i.e. a place to piece together and 'arrange' all the different sequences into a song, with multi-track view, 'blocks', ability to record audio tracks & automation across a song (without having to 'destructively' convert it to a single sequence), and so on.

The word "arrange" has been used by several DAWs out there. Cubase was one of them. In Cubase the term was used to arrange a song, which seems to be the adoption Akai went for, which to me is great. Technically every layer of song production could use an 'arranger' of sorts, e.g. we 'arrange' effects into a rack.

I am pretty sure I even saw a second effects screen in MPC 3 that popped up the old 'effects rack' now with arrows and just for reordering. Now that's some arranging. ;)

Me personally, think that 'arranging' songs need a word of higher connection, like making-an-album (Vinyl/CD) or setting-up-a-concert, both of which can be assigned numerous words. But this is only because of my own personal experience with music and equipment.

Sure, it COULD have been 'arranging' a song collection, which in my eyes is nothing more than 'arranging' that effects collection.

In the end it's only a word that renders specific meaning, and this would likely have been influenced from some other musically related convention. We all have different opinions on such things and will unlikely agree, which is the reason why the maker either re-use or coin terms for things. Other makers use the same words Akai use, but some of them for entirely different meanings on their own equipment.

Sorry to butt-in on a trivial thing like this. However, on topic...

I must say that I have been very disappointed in Akai since I bought my MPC X some 6-7 years ago. There were lots of visions projected by Akai and many were no-shows.

My plans were to have a standalone "DAW". I used Cubase, loads of plugins and tons of hardware equipment (which I still have most of, not all). I got sick and tired of the upgrade/side-grade/update, version mismatch, bugs, etc. trend which was only increasing in magnitude. I felt I spent way too much time managing software on my equipment. Lots of it was not optional either, e.g. one update on something and bang "upgrade something else or it won't work on your system".

So far, my MPC X has served me good, but I had been projected something better (for my needs, of course).

With MPC (X) 3, I can now see that initial projection from Akai. If it wasn't free I would likely just dump the MPC X and get something more traditional. However, I think that Akai is now in the process of redeeming itself. I am as impressed with Akai's tenacity as I am with some of the persons in the forums out there.

Anyways, a big THANK YOU from me to Akai. I wish many sales to support the immense effort.
