What is going on with the forum lately, what with this and the response to the 'midi is dead, long live audio' post yesterday there seems to be something malfunctioning with the sarcasm radar. Maybe a <sarcasm> bbcode is needed?

My reference to MPC4 was commentary on the seemingly common thinking that the next shiny new release is somehow finally going to unlock hidden musical potential in oneself, like MPC2 is so bad that it's just holding everyone back.

We saw the exact thing with 'standalone stems', even though the tech has been fully accessible for free for years, some were seemingly unable to use their MPC anymore because it didn't have stems inside it. And now they cant use it anyway because standalone stems mostly sounds like shit.

This isn’t an mpc forum issue. The world at large is getting dumber and more combative by the day

Does anyone have any idea how the new arranger view will deal with tracks of different length in the same sequence?

It was hard to tell from looking at various demos.

Finally the midi convo derailment is over.
We can resume the thread as normal

I have the same question.
Don't know why they didn't use clips for midi as they use for audio.
Clips whould be logical, now that it behaves more like a DAW.

I know the MPC 4.0 reference was sarcasm; most people wanted 3.0 for specific features such as the mixer, the arranger, disk streaming and some wanted a different UI.

Most people did not just want 3.0 for the sake of it, or cos its new, or cos it would make us a better beat maker, people just wanted specific features that we knew would only be available in 3.0.

Hence why the 3.0 was so anticipated.

It has more to do with some of the "old-timers" (see what I did there...sarcasm :P ); having invested so much time in the 2.0 workflow, moving to 3.0 could be a chore. I'd probably feel the same if I spent eons learning Elektron's alchemic workflow only for them to do something else. But I hardly spent time with 2.0, so diving straight into 3.0 isn't too painful. After watching several early users, I think 3.0 seems quite similar to most of the 2.0 workflow and is an improvement—just IMHO.

Tbh if 3 didn't have the one killer performance feature (macros) then I'd probably stay on 2 myself -- it works very well for what I use it for.

Well, apart from the fact that it doesn't work at all because external MIDI synch and multitimbral MIDI is completely broken in 2 and I constantly have to downgrade between 2.8 and 2.13 depending on the requirements of the project. I BEG THAT THIS IS FIXED IN 3 since if not I can't even make the upgrade at all, as there won't be a working historical version available.

I just don’t get the DAWless DAW crowd.

So many people seem to have convinced themselves that just cramming a full desktop DAW into a dedicated hardware will get them past whatever blocks they have. As if the laptop is the problem, as opposed to having the patience and perseverance to learn the tools and do the difficult part that comes between having the idea and finishing a track. It’s always going to be a worse experience than using a proper DAW unless it comes down to attaching a mouse, keyboard and 19” monitor to your MPC at which point I’m not seeing how it’s different to just using a laptop. And people who want this will never be happy, because fundamentally what they think they need is a contradiction in terms that will never work in reality.

I do understand from a commercial point of view why Akai are going in this direction - every tech company wants the Apple App Store model and pandering to “beginners” is definitely gonna sell more plugins. But they’re blowing up the things that make the MPC good in the first place to get there. I was just reading this book, and it jumped out how perfectly calibrated the MPC is for audio collage:

You have to begin somewhere . . . so you put something down. Then you put something else with it, and then you see how that works, and maybe you try something else and so on, and the picture grows in that way. One thing leads to another, and you take the options as they come, or as you are able to perceive them as you proceed. . . .

Once you get going . . . all sorts of things begin to open up.

Sometimes something just falls into place, like piano keys that every now and then just seem to be right where your fingers happen to come down. But there are also all those times you have to keep trying something over and over, and then when you finally get it right you wonder what took you so long. And of course there are also times when you have to give it up and try something else— which sometimes turns out just great as the beginning of another, totally different picture. By the way, this sort of thing is much more likely to have to do with how something fits into the design or ornamental structure of the painting than with its suitability as subject matter

3.0 looks like it will still work fine in cases where it all drops into place one block after another, but for the more usual experimentation it’s a massive step backwards. Aside from also killing live performance and a bunch of other basic techniques. Breaking fundamentals that were working just fine to please people who can’t be pleased.

Not much point to this post other than venting, but I needed to get it off my chest.

The thing is that what you call 2.0 workflow, is in fact, with some changes and modernization, the same workflow since the first MPC (or at least since the 2000classic that is the oldest one I own). And now, as benway is correctly stating it's becoming a DAW workflow, and not a very good one to be honest.

I'm working on things to play live, I don't use the word DAWless, because I used to do this before Cakewalk, Logic a Cubase were DAWs and Protools barely had midi. But I get why people don't want to base around a Laptop. As for cramming everything into the MPC, I don't it's just one of the 8 pieces of gear that I use, because it's all hands on. Unlike everything on a screen with a mouse and keyboard. Synths in laptops are copying hardware, not the other way around. They still need to be learnt often a steeper learning curve, but moving over knobs and faders as they sequence is nothing like having a mouse pointer on a picture of a knob and fader. Growing up watching electronic bands with gear and then seeing the rise of Ableton and people standing behind a laptop and novation lauchpad has never been the same experience to me. May have often been good music, but not the same performance.

The MPC is already a DAW with version 2 software (I didn't use it with V1). When you compare it to Cakewalk, Logic a Cubase when they moved to being sequencers to DAWs, it out performs them. So making music on the current generation has never been 'DAWless''.

How is an optional workflow that you don't have to even touch, if you so choose to stay with the "classic" workflow, a bad thing? Sequences and Song Mode is still there. We now just have an additional avenue to workflow, and that's a workflow that virtually all young/new producers (read: new customers) will understand as they've been using it since mom and dad bought them their first computer.

MPC is evolving, and I only see this as a good thing.
