It's a double business opportunity: on one side, charge what people is willing to pay for modding their MPCs.

On the other side, a parallel business of selling second hand MPCs on eBay...

I'm pretty sure that boards are serialized, so when such business kill your board in the process and replace it out of his own pocket for a different - used one, you'd still have to deal with stuff like deregistereing it from previous account (if there's one tied to it), plugin installation limits and other stuff - basically getting a new board is like getting a second hand unit, am I right ? :hmmm:

Theres still a lot of experimentation to be done for scenarios where id have to replace the customers unit if i were to damage one.

One would be flat out getting them a replacement unit out of my pocket or finding a source for buying the rock2 som module itself and then figuring out a way to clone the emmc of the broken unit and copying it to the new unit then possibly for serialization all id need to do is edit the bios and overwriting the stock serial with the customers serial.

Messing up and killing these boards wont be too common as im pretty experienced working on stuff and fixing my mistakes. Worse case would be if i happen to damage the cpu but If i can just buy the rockchip it would be easily replaceable.

And ill be fully transparent, the mpc i upgraded i did actually run into problems due to either being sold faulty chips or me messing up. I thought i had killed the cpu but no it was only the chips. Found a better supplier and mitigated the error and its working fine. So im not too worried about damaging these devices.

But if it were to happen the customer would be made right some way.

Hope this clears up some skepticism.

Of course with any business theres always going to be some level of trust me bro that needs to be risked.

Hey G, good to see you here. I posted your videos on reddit the Force & MPC subs. This clears up some stuff. I hope you get someone to bite on your service.

Akai has already addressed this in my opinion...

If you want/need more RAM....Purchase the MPC X SE or MPC KEY 61

Seems like everyone with a "Compact Nissan Sentra or similar" wants a Fully Juiced Up HEMI DEMON Engine in it,

You want a Truly Portable MPC, Purchase a MPC LIVE instead buying Battery Attachment Upgrades...

You Want an MPC wit 4GB of RAM, Purchase a X SE or KEY 61

AKAI Gave Us Options

Just my .02¢

Nobody is stopping people from getting those other MPCs that has 4GB. The thing is not everyone want those models for all kinds of reason. People like GMorb are a blessing to some people in the community.

For what it's worth he at least exposed that 4GB is possible on any MPC & the Force & that Akai is half-stepping. From the jump they could've offered both RAM models as an option, especially knowing they was gonna make RAM hungry plugins down the line & that this gen would be in service for this long amount of time.

How about I want a portable MPC with built in speakers and 4gb RAM? :P

As if these aren't computers and people don't mod computers ever.

With me...If I need 4GB of RAM, I'm creating a Lavish Orchestral Composition and I would want to be Stationary somewhere, behind a MPC with a Big Screen or a Keyboard Attached to it
Not at the Park, on the Subway, or on the Toilet with my LIVE 2

For me, I can whip together quick compositions at the Dinner Table, on the Porch or in My Car....with 2GB of RAM

Two ¢ lol

 Go higher in Ram? that would be really dope.

Nutrisse wrote:I should clarify - I didn't mean Akai would be modding units. I meant that MPCs having 4gb (and possibly higher) as standard in the near future is a near certainty. I'm all for hacking the planet, and I have a long history of doing so, but I don't trust that Akai *wouldn't* implement a sort of RAM "shut off valve" on future firmware releases when not adhering to the amount of RAM the firmware expects to see on boot.

Personally, I'd jump into a RAM hack if I knew the machine was running a custom/open source firmware. That said, it looks like the cost of this mod is near exactly as much as I thought it would be. Not sure the additional $300 is worth it for the MPC Live in my case, but I'm excited for anyone willing to jump in. It's a step in the right direction.

researchintospeed wrote:I'm seriously considering this, ie paying for the service this person is now offering. With the caveat I'd get a 2nd MPC live as a tester to try it on...

I can't see AKAI going near this. They might have to mea culpa for the whole '2gb of sampling ram' debacle at launch. It would also eat into the market for the likely/expected new MPC that will come on the heals of MPC3. For sure theres no news or indication for that future product, but the platform is 6 or 7 years old, processor and ram update on a new device would keep their hold in the market and shift plenty of units.

And f*** it, as they say, Hack the planet!

Have a great day :)

I said it before and I'll say it again - the juice ain't worth the squeeze for this particular mod. It goes beyond an average skill set and requires expensive tools to even think about doing. EVEN IF one had the ability and tools to do this sort of thing, would they REALLY want to deal with the barrage of emails from paranoid MPC users every time something unrelated to the mod goes sideways later on down the road? On the other hand, would you trust a modder doing this to your machine? If they screwed it up, it wouldn't be a "whoops I cracked the plastic" sort of mistake. You'd have to basically buy an entirely new unit.

The only way I can see this as being worth anyone's time would be if the roks were modded and checked out with proper test equipment beforehand. This way the buyer could just swap them out on their own. Even then, you're then paying what, $300+ for something Akai will likely officially do sooner than later, anyway?

I'd love to be proven wrong here. The MPC Live desperately needs more memory, but I'm not sure this mod is it.

Let's not forget a basic tech principle: if you add more resources to the average computer, you end up having software that does the same job but it's more resource hungry.

If 4 gb becomes the new standard, in a year 2 gb units will become obsolete and 8 gb will be the new need, while the musical capabilities of the device will substantially be the same. It's the same race of enshitification that has happened to PCs for the last 30 years.

Maybe just deactivate all the plugins from the MPC before doing any work - then if board replaced, just register as a new unit? I've bought a few used MPCs and the registration has always worked fine - I sign in using my account on the MPC, then can download and activate my plugins etc - if I swap to another MPC and have run out of activations, just deactivate one one and reactivate. Whenever something is sent for repair/work always best to back it up and deactivate personal accounts (e.g. apple will tell you to do this), so I guess just same applies here.
