MPC doesn't recognise different eternal midi chanels

I have an external sequencer feeding into the MPC software, with drums on channel 10 and synth on channel 1, both playing into the MPC at the same time. I set the MPC's receive channels to 10 and 1 accordingly, but the MPC software does not respect my settings. It just records into whichever channel I have highlighted / selected, completely ignoring my MIDI in / receive settings.
