PAD SEL touch button

Hi,
what the PAD SEL touch button used for? I havent found it in teh manual or figured out what it is used for pleaseImage

Toggle "PAD SEL" and hit a pad to select it's note as the step sequencer's current note. Then untoggle PAD SEL mode, to get the pads back to their role as note toggles on the bar's 16 steps.

However, regardless of whether PAD SEL is highlighted, hitting a pad still selects it.
Could you clarify the difference?
The hardware SELECT button seems to work as you described.
