Hi

I just got an MPC Live 2, i did this upgrade to see if it can replace my MPC 1000 with JJOSXL. I love it till now, def more powerful, but I have a major issue that kills my workflow which is related to the sequencer.

I will explain with a very easy example:

Let's say I have a drum program with just a kick on pad 1. I sequence 1 step on each beat, so 4/4 pattern (or 1,5,9,13 on step sequencer) with FULL VELOCITY. Then i try to add another note on step 8 with velocity 10, that step is right before 3td kick. This is helpful so i have different volumes for swinged notes.

All works well, till i add swing to the sequence. Let's say i add a swing of 65, normally in Ableton the swing steps will be moved forward and get shorter so that it doesn't overlap with the note on step 9, which is the way it should work. On MPC i get a full 16th note length that gets moved forward and overlaps with next step in the sequencer, in this case the step 9. When I play the sequence step 9 will inherit velocity of step 8 so I will lose the full velocity.

I have to mention that this issue occurs only when I have that pad set to note on, but does NOT occur when in one shot mode.

This is a killer in my opinion, as i often use this trick to make the swing notes quieter, but in the MPC the very next note always become quiet as well.

The workaround i to shorten the swang notes so that it doesn't overlap with next note. But this is so time consuming and big workflow killer.

It would be great to have some kind of last note priority, or any way to stop velocities from overlap, or the swing to act as in ableton, when swang notes gets shorter to not overlap with the very next note.

Is there any way of achieving what I want? any settings that I a missing?

Here are 2 images that demonstrates the issue:

If you think of it this makes perfect sense, with note on the entirety of the event matters, so stuff has to be moved around. WIth one shot only event start matters as the whole sample is being played.

I'd say either use one shots or have a separate pad for secondary kicks - at least that's how i was always do it to have more control.

I am not sure how much sense it makes as on older MPC's this issue is not there, also on Elektron or Ableton, MPC Live 2 is the only sampler that i have that does this. Why would I want overlapping velocities on the same note? a note can't be played in the same time twice anyway so would make much more sens for the velocity info of the first note to end when the next note starts.
Making secondary pad for it is a good workaround but it messes up the pad layout, i like my clap to be right next to my kick. I also have to switch pads to add those secondary notes and group them cause I want them mono, which is an extra unnecessary step for something that could be very easily solved with last step priority or velocity retrigger... Even on Mono Synths that have retrigger the velocities are retriggered together with the sounds, and those are not "One shots", they are "Note On" type.
I was using this trick on my MPC 1000 on almost every pad, so i will have to double all my pads and mess up my layout.
Is there any better solution for it?

If the polyphony of the pad is set to mono (prog edit > global) then there should be no overlapping of notes from the same pad (I assume this is what you mean by 'overlapping velocities'?).

And for mono synths (where no overlapping is allowed across all notes) set the polyphony for the entire keygroup program to mono

Hi,

I just found out exactly what was happening and how to fix it. I will explain, maybe this can help someone having this issue.

The problem was not velocity, it was actually the NOTE ON and NOTE OFF Events order. If i have a note on step 8 with swing, which overlaps with the next note on step 9 the event list will be: NOTE ON for step 8, then NOTE ON for step 9, then after few ms NOTE OFF from step 8 which will stop also the step 9, then NOTE OFF from step 9 which will do nothing. This way step 9 will stop after few ms after it started.

This was definitely a bug as I just updated my MPC to Beta 3.4 and the problem is solved.

So the solving solution was an update to my OS.

Thank you all for answering!
