Installing internal SSD hard drive.

Hello community! I’m new here and go by Aurum Rhythm Music. My apologies if this has already been said in the past. I currently own a MPC X SE.

I’m looking at upgrading my stock hard drive to an internal SSD hard drive. I’m wondering if installing the MPC OS is an easy task to do or if it is just more worth it to buy an external SSD. I will eventually be buying more instruments and expansions for the X as time goes on. I just have a stock system in place right now.

I currently save all of my projects/expansions on my external SD card so I know I won’t lose that information, but will I be able to easily install the OS and continue on form where I left off? Is it worth it to just buy an external SSD as opposed to to internal? Thank you for your time and advice. Much love to y’all!!

An internal or external hard drive/SSD is just for storing your expansions, samples, etc. The MPC firmware is stored directly on the internal memory built onto the motherboard. You aren’t replacing that when you add your drive. It’s very easy to install an internal HD/SSD on the MPC X/SE, so only buy an external drive if you’ll be joining it up to other devices/computers.

There is no stock "hard drive" on MPC. There is a bit of internal memory yes, but it's not removable and the common wisdom is to not write or delete anything from it. It doesn't even show up when you plug into a PC.

Think of it more like adding a second hard drive than replacing. No OS to install. Just pop open the back, plug it in, and go. You might have to format it, I don't remember, but that's probably something to do in the MPC itself.

As others have said, you don't "upgrade" the drive in the MPC X SE, Live 2, or Key 61. You just add a drive that is accessible on your PC/Mac when you put the unit into controller mode and it's plugged into a computer. You can also access the drive in standalone mode, etc. I would avoid saving projects or anything to the internal storage, so get like a 512GB to 1TB or higher SSD and put all your stuff on that. Remember to back it up from time to time, because for as good as SSDs are these days, they sometimes take a dive and go bad. Samsung makes good drives, as do some other brands. Look up reviews on NewEgg.com and go for it. Good luck.
