I completely understand all of that!
I still use my emu turbo phatt & TR-808 (both in excellent condition).
But, it's just more fun to get into MPC X and it's tools.
I am able to always get the sound I want/crave.

Yes, they are, however, they had no choice. They'd be irrelevant if they hadn't evolved in that direction - and I do think that the natural evolution of these devices.

Right now, MPCs are just a collection of form factors. Internally, it's just a weak PC running the MPC Software as Firmware with a UI befitting the form factor of the device in question. It's an Appliance, like ATMs that ran OS/2 or Windows. Those are just PCs, too, like these MPCs.

The issue is that people are increasingly not using appliances like MPCs as a hub for their hardware-based studios the way they were expected to in the past. These days, most users' studios are digital. They don't buy walls of hardware synths. They buy V Collection. They don't buy racks of hardware FX. They buy FX Collection, or Softube, or Universal Audio, or Plug-in Alliance, or Waves, etc. The vast majority can't even afford that stuff.

This is the only way for a company to make devices that can sell at reasonable prices and grow their marketshare.

This is why Akai had to pivot with the MPC.

I don't see anything wrong with it.

Honestly, most legacy users have too much familiarity bias to really be objective about these things. You really have to court at the grass roots to get some useful feedback about changes like this. Legacy users generally will be averse to most changes they haven't personally ask for.

I dont see that Akai are moving away from the MPC's natural work flow; they are builiding on top of it; much of the new features are optional.

The workflow on the newer MPCs is markedly different from the "Classic MPCs." Yes, the nomenclature remained the same, but how the machines are used and operated had changed quite a bit.

Again, I am not saying it's good or bad. I am saying it's the natural progression, and either they followed this path or became irrelevant. Nostalgia is a powerful drug, but most people aren't addicted. They know they have choices and many will evaluate those choices.

It's progress. Liking or preferring something does not mean it merits locking into place in perpetuity. Change is inevitable, and over decades of time what a user base asks for will shift and change, as well. So, users are getting what they are asking for... and what they feel they need...

It's just not a certain subset of users that feel the way the OP does, because he isn't one of those users needing or asking for those things.

Akai has to grow their market at the grass roots, and this means meeting the people coming into the market at their expectations.

If they won't do it, someone else will... So, these are the rocks and hard places that "Legacy" users inevitably have to deal with. Legacy users are no longer the primary drivers of the evolution of these devices/software. They are already locked in, so Akai has little to gain from prioritizing them. Despite any complaints, 98.6% of them will never go elsewhere.

Beyond that... It's no different than PC DAWs. Pro Tools is now FORCED to introduce more production-oriented-features because they have capped out their primary market segment and have to seek other avenues for growth. Same with Cubase, Digital Performer, Studio One and other DAWs. The market is saturated, as well. If Pro Tools won't add production features, then why should anyone who isn't professionally predisposed to standardizing on Pro Tools pay $599 for Pro Tools Studio when they can download LUNA for free and Record and Mix their music?

The MPC is fundamentally just a DAW running on a machine wiht a different form factor - like the difference between a triple display studio workstation and a Surface Pro. It is subject to the same market forces that PC DAWs have always dealt with, because that's fundamentally what it is and we are no longer in an era where 80% of the population is PC Illiterate and the only laptops available weight 10lbs and literally can't even run off the charger.

As time goes on, MPCs compete more and more directly with PC DAWs, because they are not practically interchangeable with a Laptop with a Pad Controller.

Being frank... Reputation adn misnomers are the primary drivers carrying the brand, at this point. It's why they invest so heavily in marketing.

I'd argue at the ore the MPC is being used the same way its always been used but just with the addition of modern functionality. Hene if a person chose to ignore the said new features they would still be able to use the current MPCs to perform those 80s functions .

Nostalgia is addicitive as is Newness for newness sake.

Rgarding the traks to programs relationship; that should be an optional choice; Akai should not force that upon older users.

I've been using version 3 for about 3 days now and i dunno dudes.. i dont like it lol.

I dont dig the layout of the main menu, dont like the way the piano rolls are all annoying to fight with and get into. dont like that drum programs are now @#$%ed up and i cant seem to export kits like drum kits dont exist now... it suddenly feels alien to me when i was a proficient mpc user. what I've lost is greater than what I've gained lol!

sigh... I lost my plugins, i lost my familiarity, i lost my will to want to even use it and the midi bugs are still present. I am definitely reverting to 2.x. new extra stuff seems to be less important to me than being able to put my ideas down quickly.

Also lol WTF @ the metronome? Chit has a wild bug in it. If set the tripplet in tc the metronome hits off time lol. It makes it very hard to rat-i-tat-tat in a janky break beat... FAIL.

3 days may not be enough time to get used to a new OS like this. I don't know what you mean by fighting to get into the piano roll. I just put in the left slide out menu to quickly get in there & other menus I use the most.

Kits can be saved/loaded as tracks. Akai hinted that they fixed the MIDI bug & the return of time-sigs in their last big update message, but we'll see in May.

What do you mean you lost you plugins? Are not on your inMusic account?

The lost of familiarity is temporary if you keep using it. You can stay on MPC2, but then you might get left behind.

I had all the plugins for free on previous builds, without needing a linked account or any internet at all. Just turn it on and use it. They "fixed" it haha. (that part isnt important)

I'll give it a couple more days... its like someone coming into a blind persons home and moving all the furniture. its still furnished with the right furnishing but its all in different spots.

Left behind?!! by what or who? By my art? Is it gonna leave me a deer john letter? That EVIL B*TCH...

OK cool you got your plugins. I guess the the ones that came with the device would still need to be registered so you can claim it if you sell the MPC & buy a new one.

Yeah man give it at least 2 weeks. Left behind in that 2.15 may not get updated again. Not that would it would stop being useful, but some bugs may never get fixed. No deer john letter, but that B*tch may still be Evil.

3 days is long enuff to get the vibe of something; the new OS should not feel alien to old users that means they have made changes that ae perhaps too drastic.

I think they should of kept the orginal main screen; as the new main screen just has too much empty space; there are alot of people who have tried 3.0 and reverted back; that should be some sort of red flag for Akai.

I like the new main screen.

I am surprises that is too much empty space for you. Too it is on the edge of looking cramped.

Lolz you make it sound like F1 and we're all competing for some championship.

MPC is just a tool and Akai have simply released another set of options for how to use it. Plenty of us don't like those options and it doesn't fit with our workflow, there's no "getting left behind"

we are being left out on 2.x as several instruments and expansions are only compatible with 3.4; it will be very telling when Air instruments releases a new plugin to see if it is only 3.4 as that will fully indicate that all updates for 2.x are indeed over.

It ain't that deep. But if you plan on staying on 2.0 you better hope Akai don't abandon it. Hopefully they just need more time to workout some kind of legacy mode or use PC# for programs so they can be switched per track like the JJOS could do.
