The added capabilities with the new OS features are indeed impressive. At least on paper. Navigating between them without dedicated knobs for the essentials is a whole nother story. I wouldn't call it a nightmare, but fast and effective it is not. In a, you know, musical instrument, this actually matters.

I still struggle to grasp how they could fail to give the Key 61 16 qlink knobs, but even then it would still benefit immensely from having some programmable knobs independent of the qlink system, or at the very least a proper MIDI implementation for external control if they can't be arsed to provide the knobs themselves. A button for jumping in and out of the mod matrix would help a lot too. As would replacing the shift button so that it can be be held with a different hand than the one turning the data wheel. (Key 37)

As an example to illustrate, say you want negative values for filter envelope and keytracking. As of now that would have to be done in the mod matrix. This means a lot of jumping between the mod matrix and the filter section to get things to sit right and it's extremely tedious for an operation that could be done pretty quickly with a more sensible UI.

This may seem like nitpicking, but the need for a well thought out workflow doesn't magically disappear with added fancy features and complexity, it actually increases, and so every little thing that could help with relatively little effort and cost should be taken into serious consideration. Looking forward to new hardware that better addresses these issues among others.

Many of these problems can be fixed by just letting people that actually use the device redesign the OS. The lack of qlinks on the key61 is just shame. Maybe because they didn't want to go all out on their first MPC with Keys. Hopefully they won't hold back on the next models & tiltable wouldn't hurt.

Yeah... I when I saw they cheaped out on the number of QLinks on the Mpc61Key, I was messing with people..
Like its a flagship ain't it? Then they gave them the Main-Dial from the Live rather than the X. Like hell nah..

In about a week, I will have sold my MpcX for another synth.
I got a Take5 coming, I already own a TEO5, Pro3, OB6 and so on... After having the TEO5 and Take5 next to eachother I may end up selling off the Oberheim TEO5, because I also own an OB6. If I do that I'll be most likely buying an Intellijel Cascadia.

As for the Mpc series... I'll keep an eye on it here and there, but overall.. Not a fan of Akai. Companies like Sequential are just far better in terms of Customer Service, fixing bugs, and adding features with the suggestion of there customers.

I'm not trying to be a "politically correct" hippie or anything, because I am not, lol. Like I own some Adidas, Nike, Rane(also inmusic) and such, but Akai is just an annoying company to deal with. I don't overly have physical issues with my MpcX, but it's the long road of updates that are annoying. It's also the reason I gave up on Bitwig for now. Just missing fundamental things and lacking common sense as far as workflow/feature/updates.

I don't wanna keep waiting for them to do this or that. I also don't want to have to think in the back of my head, that if I update my machine, they will break something else with the update, or new bugs are introduced. I just do not have the time for it.

Loved some of the previous Mpc's that others may have hated, like the 2500 with JJOS, or the 60, or even the 2000classic, but not really feeling what's going on for now.

Maybe one day everything will work like it should. I'll keep an eye out for that day.

J.O.BEATS wrote:They didn’t make 3.0 the way they did to improve the MPC. They did it to open up more sales to FL users.

And that’s fine, they are a business first.

They went through all the time and effort, without intent of improving the MPC?

Well, they must be lucky, because I think v3 is a huge improvement.

They Improved some features. At the same time they Changed some things. Some people are Uncomfortable with Change. Stagnant lol. Progression in Technology sparks fear in some people. But if you're Musically Inclined, you can make music with any software/firmware...even if you have to perform Workarounds!

Optimistic vs Pessimistic....That's all

not all change is good; for instance the change they made to time signatures is a limitation which was not present in the old version.

It dont impact me personally; but i get why people who use different time signatures would take issue with that change.

Of course people can still make music or find workarounds; but people should be able to express they opinion on things they dont like regarding the direction Akai is taking.

People never tell those who kept complaining about some midi bug to stop complaining or to find a workaround, so its interesting how some complaints are tolerated, while other complaints are dismissed as moaning.

I'm not a fan of the OS3 workflow, so I use 2.15.
Akai is kinda wack for switching up the workflow on a device that their core users have been using for 8 years.
Making their core users pay for unusable stems, but making it much better and free in OS3 for the new users?? I don't think Akai could made the middle finger any clearer towards the people that made them who they are today.
But I will say I LOVE my MPC-X with 2.15. These newer MPC's do so much more than the old. I would take a used MPC One over an MPC3000 or an SP-1200 any day for making music with. Now for resale value, give me a vintage sampler, but I don't buy gear to hopefully resell; I buy it to make music.
...and yes, current MPC's are cheaper. Technology is cheaper, and being mass produced. 10 year old kids weren't buying a $5,000 MPC-60 forty years ago, but Mom can give them $5 for Koala... and Dads old iPad is free! Add to the fact that CLASSIC Hip-Hop was made on older gear, and nostalgia comes with a cost. The sound is debatable, and while comparing waveforms and listening in a quiet room with expensive monitors can support the claim, most consumers don't care. We know analog sounds better than digital, but people jam tf out with their cheap ear buds, playing compressed MP3's, on their cell phone. Only producers care about sound, but producers aren't supporting your music. We have multiple EQ's, compressors, limiters, ducking, vinyl emulation, FX, routing options, VST instruments, Q-Links, touch screen, XY FX, stems, quick chop, automation, updated connectivity, SSD and SD storage, WIFI, virtually unlimited sampling, and its cheap, but folks out here talking about "nope, not good enough!" To each his own, but they can keep making authentic 90's music with that old ish! LOL!
There is a benefit to OS3 though; we never have to buy another new MPC again! 2.15 works fine. I can't wait for a new MPC to drop so I can get a used X-SE for $300.00 next year!

u got some fire beats on dat beat tape for sure; but yeah Akai defo over prioritizing new users at expense of long time users, is a shit move.

You can't just slap on more knobs and screens because you have room on the panel.. there is heat and power requirements, etc.. have you seen how much space they take on the x guts? It is a incredible amount of electronics to support them..

...But HEY! This new 3.4.3 feature that tells you good morning in Japanese when you turn your mpc just released. Or the game changing feature that lets you press + and - to access the arrange window then it keygroups any samples that says "tear riff" just released....

I want the impatient toe tapping Lady animation Back from the MPC 4000.... All we got on the new ones is a Cute (twerking?) Duck in mother ducker.

I don't think that was a Change, More or less an Omission. They Probably Snuck it out of there, thinkin nobody would recognize it. But I'm pretty sure they'll Slide it Back in, in the next few Updates.

One day, I loaded 2.8 back...And Boy...I appreciate the "Changes" they made...Good and Bad lol
