MPC Live II in 2025 – still worth it for casual use?

Hey everyone,

I’m new to the forum, so just a quick intro: I’m Marco from Germany, and I’m about to buy my first MPC.

My main goal is to make some beats just for fun every now and then – smaller projects, nothing too crazy with lots of FX plugins. I’d probably do the final mix on my computer anyway. I’d also love to use the MPC live on stage with my band, mostly to trigger some drum loops or samples here and there.

Right now, I’m really leaning towards the MPC Live II, even though it’s officially discontinued. It’s on sale at a great price, and I guess any new model (if one comes out soon) would probably be way more expensive.

So, for what I need – casual beatmaking and simple live use – do you think it’s still worth getting the Live II without regret? Or would you rather wait for the next-gen MPC, assuming it’s around the corner?

I’m just a bit unsure how well MPC OS 3 runs on the older hardware. Would really appreciate any thoughts or advice!

MPC Live 2 is not officially discontinued, Akai have not made any such announcement and it's still listed on their site as part of the current range. It's a fine machine, runs MPC3 without any issue, as does the original MPC Live model, as do all 2GB units.

Yes there has been some leaks about a potential new MPC model currently in development, but it could be many months before this is released and there's no firm details on what it might be. Likely MPC Live 3, but no indication that they are upping the ram or CPU for it. As the 'mid range' MPC it might continue to be 2GB like the latest MPC One+ and MPC Key 37. All MPCs, including the MPC X SE use the same CPU.

IMO, get the Live 2 at the sale price.

My dealer told me that the MPC Live 2 has been marked as “End of Life” and that they can’t order any more units except the ones they still have in stock.
So I’m really glad to hear that it’s still holding up well! I think I’ll go for it then.

cos once the Live 3 gets announced the prices of the Live 2 will likely get even lower.

then u can decide if u want the latests and greatest of if the live 2 will suffice

Yes, Akai might release a new MPC tomorrow – or maybe not for another six months. Since we’re planning to play some concerts this summer, I find it hard to just wait. And if the MPC Live II is powerful enough for what I need, I’m not sure if waiting is really worth it for me (even though, of course, I’d prefer not to buy an old model if a new one is just around the corner). Tough decision.

yeah if u need it for this summer then crack on with the live 2 as for most situations its fine;

also note that some have expressed concerns about the mpc 3 software for live use; so might want to consider which OS u intend to use.

I would say - Yes, it is powerful beat-making machine. I'd go for it if price is good.

Sounds like you just need a One. Live2 would be overkill for what you need. Save the cash

But yes, the live2 is very relevant and will be for a long long time.

You say "casual" but how much time are you willing to invest to learn how to use the MPC Live II? Because it's the only question you should ask yourself. Whether you use it once a month or every day for small or big projects isn't really relevant, it is you who is going to have to spend time learning it.

Obviously, the MPC Bible can help you get into the MPC faster.
