Hello,

I took my MPC One out of storage, updated it, everything was working fine except the power jack was intermittent, could cause the unit to cut out if the cord was oriented the wrong way.

Now, however, the unit won't boot at all. If you press the power button, the pad LEDs will start to cycle, get to orange and then shut off.

If you press and hold the power button, the pad LEDs will cycle all the way through to dark blue, then slowly fade out. However the unit still fails to switch on, screen is blank, no audio.

Is there any way to factory reset the unit? Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

MOS

it looks like You have problem or with power brick or DC socket.
If You have multimeter, measure the voltage on output dc plug as a start

Damn, a new carrier board + shipping to where I live will cost more than 60% of the cost of a new unit.

I've got another PSU on the way but I don't think it's that. Is there any way to test the carrier board?

This thing is in mint condition, is there any market for the other parts?

Start Simple 1st. Get a Multimeter and test the AC Adaptor. I believe the ONE's have a 19v Adaptor and the ONE PLUS has a 12v Adaptor.

A bad adaptor would be the best case scenario. If all good...Your LCD may be faulty.

I gotta assume it’s your AC adapter if you had to move it a certain way to power on before this happened.

Send it to laptop service, it's just a mini-pc with touchscreen running linux (with mpc app on top).

There can be a minor fault, like loose lcd cable inside, or other loose connector.

If there is a power boot sequence - there is life in unit, don't loose hope :)

Hello all,

Thanks for your help so far, here's a quick update :

1. The AC adapter definitely seems to be working correctly.

2. Akai recommended that I try to get it to boot into firmware update mode using : FULL LEVEL + BROWSE + PAD BANK C/G while powering on, it doesn't do this either.

3. I contacted one of the Akai repair places here in the UK, he basically said it's toast, as he can't get parts and if it won't boot into the firmware update mode then it must be a mainboard fault.

4. I could purchase a new main/Carrier board from MPCstuff, but the board + shipping + customs fees would be close to £400, on a unit that cost £600 originally (and the board may not fix it. A new MPCone+ is £570, they are also selling the last of the MPC live 2 here for £650. Not sure what to do now, just seems like a huge waste.

Inspect the barrel jack on the mainboard. I bet its delaminated itself at the solder joint or you've broken the center pin all together. what you've described sounds like a broken jack. At first it was semi working in the proper orientation (where the welds were still semi conductive). tack on some more violence and bada bing it doesnt power on. Open the unit up, plug the power into the barrel jack and probe the solder joints of the barrel jack with the multimeter. If you have no juice at the barrel, then thats your problem. if not then you may have shorted it and damaged chips. I'd check the barrel jack first thoroughly. This is why that cable stay exists on the mpc, to keep from yanking the power and snapping the barrel jack. Never use the mpc on your lap, its not portable in that manner, just put it on a table in a dedicated area.

I don't have anything to lose now really, so I've tried this.

Soldered joints of the power barrel jack definitely getting power.

Removed the carrier board, disconnecting all the cables. When connected to power, the 3 LEDs on the board come on, then shut off. There is a small button marked recovery on the carrier board, but it does not do anything when pressed or held with the power button.

I can't see anything obvious that looks like it's let the smoke out.

I've seen a working second hand unit for less than what a new carrier board would cost, I may buy that and transport the board across. Then I would have a whole bunch of other spares too for the future.

id get a second hand unit if this mpc is worth it to you, or splurge for a new/different model. the carrier board sounds like the most likely culprit, since you have tested the DC input path.

I got my OG One for £250 2nd hand, if you don't *need* the WiFi and Bluetooth it's worth hunting around and throwing some low offers at people on Ebay.

Why are You considering buing whole new carrier board? give mpc to some skilled laptop service technician, don't know where are You located but every country has own Louis Rossmann, contact him/her and get it done.
Even in Poland we have some service magicians that love to take some broken unusual piece of electronics and repair it for clicks and views.

Replace is not repair!
