Just randomly popped onto the JJOS website to see if they was a latest bug fix update for JJOS2XL and Ive seen that there is a brand new OS called Light currently under development (with an October release date)

Oh wow - great to see he's still actively working on the OS!
If I had to guess, could be a replacement for the free version? Possibly holding back on some of the full functions, but enabling data saving? Still plenty of folk starting out fresh with the 1000 / 2500 these days, so I imagine there could be a market for something like that..

What's your bug fix you were hoping for? if you don't mind me asking? Curious as I've been on 2XL since 2013 & never found anything buggy!

Very curious as well.
"A release is a schedule in October."
Welcome back king :worthy:

New 'Chord' & 'Cycle' modes look like they could be very cool to use for sequencing external synths - but a handful of previous features had to be dropped in this version to accommodate the new ones. I'll stick with 2XL personally, but this could suit some users well I imagine!

This comment has been added to the video. Bit surprised by some of the features that have been removed tbh. Will be interesting to see what's been added in their place though.

Memorys are insufficient in order to add the new feature to OS3.
Some features were deleted in order to secure a memory.
Since it not only deleted the feature, but the addition was carried out, it was made "Light" instead of "OS3Light."

The feature which is in OS2XL or OS3 and is not in Light
There is no Tsig field. (Onry 4/4 time signature)
There is no layer of a sample.
There is not CHOP. (To set up START/END of a sample on the screen of a program) It enabled it)
The loop of a sample does not have alternate and crossfade only by a forward loop.
There is no arpeggiator in the track types.
There are no all features regarding the pattern.

The reason for having made "Light" using OS3
OS3 is designed to be easily ported to the MPC2500, so it is easy to port.
Since OS2XL has many features added later, since the code is complicated, if deletion and an addition of the feature are carried out, it will tend to generate many bugs.
Also, porting to the MPC2500 is not as easy as OS3.

Release order
Light (MPC1000)

OS128Light (MPC1000)

OS128Light (MPC2500)

Light (MPC2500)

Yeah for me personally I'd have more use for the stuff he's taken off than what's been added, but I could see the new additions working well for particular users for sure.

Sadly jj team don't have source code for 2000/2000xl :(

Yeah he's only able to build OS stuff for the two models he worked on with Akai - the 1000 & 2500.

yeah sadly the bits hes removed are essential to me.
why couldnt he ditch the real time time stretch/pitch shift? I mean does anyone even use these? Theyre crap quality relatively and just a gimmick, you cant record or sequence it (afaik). im no programmer but assume they use a fair bit of space, relatively speaking.

I hate to criticise JJ as the work he does is superb and the 1k is my favourite bit of kit, indispensable, and hes transformed it, but some odd decisions are made..

JJOS different versions have always been a bit frustrating, split between OS3 better sampling capabilities and OS(2)XL better MIDI management, and random features very few people really use.

Imo the best way to go forward would be to do a poll so the community can vote for which features are more important. For instance a list of say 10 or 20 main features with everyone in this forum having ability to vote for 3 or 5. Let the poll run for a few months, push notifications and see what comes up. Then maybe a little back and forth with JJ for discussing some details, to do the ultimate JJOS version for an extra fee.

Would love to see that.

Absolutely. Between the two theres an ultimate JJOS04 or something. Like for example i have no idea why he removed tails from 02. Or the cool velocity offset from the main page in os1. Amazing for acid as you can vary the accents live... But hes not like the modern programmers, all online and looking for feedback, he kind of lives in his own world it seems.
I got my 1k after 03 was released so jumped straight into 3 so havent got much experience with that. Every time i try it it always feels like loads is missing. But i use MIDI all the time and everyone says 02 is far better for that. If the projects were compatible with both it woudnt be so bad but you need to kind of commit to one.

Again, I really dont want to criticise in any way, what hes done with what would otherwise be pretty obsolete technology is amazing. its just like you say frustrating when with a few tweaks we could have perfection...
Cheers
