Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

So the MPC2000xl was my first sampler I ever bought and dreamed about one day maxing it out with all the add on, I never got to do that when I had my first Xl, fast forward I bought a new Xl and got every add on that was available back then. The FMX008M was the last thing and found a person who made clones, I got it yesterday and was able to install it later on in the day, I reformatted it and set up some sounds to save, I turned my Xl off and it loaded up all my sounds fast, I was impressed and happy but then things took a turn. I was playing with the drums and it started crackling and completely disappeared, I turned the unit off and back on and the f rom is completely gone, I opened up the MPC and reseated it and nothing. I have a internal SD card, I know what people are going to say, "why do you need the F-rom" Its more a "having what I couldn't get when I was a teenager." So I know it's not needed but it's cool to have. Anyway, Im wondering if the SD card somehow fried the F-rom? I was reading it shares the same power, Im wondering if it's that or I just got a bad one? I talked to the seller and they have said it was tested for an hour before it was sent out and they want me to send it back to check out what's going on. I hope I can work out the situation and get the MPC I dreamed about when I was a kid, Thank you in advance for any insight you guys might have.

If someone sold you a new clone board and its giving you problems, can't you send it back?

I had exactly the same thought when I saw these; and my MPC had exactly the same issue. I think the seller(s) who are selling these boards are selling defective ones. I had one, same symptoms as you; so I swapped into my other MPC 2000xl - guess what same issue. Had the seller replace it; worked fine for about 1/2 hour and the replacement board did exactly the same thing as the first one (in both MPCs). Hope you managed to get a refund.. Leaving this message as a warning to any other 2000xl who might be tempted to invest in one of these

I think that perhaps it is a design issue with the clones or something more fundamental, rather than the seller - as I have purchased a replacement screen from him & that was 100% legit and working. I wouldn't want to cast shade on the seller - just the FMX008M clone boards

But it’s still good to know. There are clone boards that work, so it is also a matter of who makes these boards for whom to sell. That is interesting to know. Given that you also bought a screen from that seller, I already have a good idea of who you’re talking about (and probably will not jump on the next batch).

There is a fella named t0ri on this forum that makes his on project of flash module but for S2000 (and showed that it works) - as we spoke in DMs He said that with small change it is possible to run this card in mpc 2000/2000xl.

Having had it working for a (very short) period, I can offer this further insight. It is no faster to load sounds on boot than a CF/SD card (which was a further disappointment, as I thought they might load more 'instantly'. If you've already got a CF or SD card reader then this is a really expensive way to gain an additional 8mb's of storage. Definitely one for the purist/historian

Thanks. Yeah I figured as much, still tempted though for the sheer fact that those 8 megabyres load on startup

It comes in very handy on the MPC 2000 Classic for sure, but since it has a ZuluSCSI inside there is really no need as it boot just as quickly from the SCSI drive. But of course as a collector i have the original F-ROM inside.
