Jogwheel through sequence in grid to punch in notes

I just cant wrap my brain around this and the frustration just keeps mounting and mounting. This is a feature i can not forgive if this is not managed and leading me to want to sell the mpc 2.0.
WHY can't i not dial through the sequence with the jogdial and than punch in notes. This is an ommision i have A HARD time getting to gripst with. It would smoothline the production flow that is up to par with what an MPC is all about. Now im just....... lost for words. My MPC4000 can easily do this and has worked really well for me.

Is there anything in the making, are there workarounds (besides the stepsequencer which i dont like)?

yeah, this is one of many things missing in current era mpc's and one of the reasons i ended up going back to mpc1000 with jjos2xl. step recording is essential for some of the music i create, such a quick workflow. also, in jjos2xl you can even enter notes on the grid from the main page and go to the grid editor just when you need to edit something in finer detail. if you add the time signature sh1t show, midi bugs and lastly the complete erasure of the programs from mpc 3.x firmware my answer is a clear no. i find jjos2xl more advanced under many areas, of course it doesnt have synths or great effects , it doesnt mimic a daw but its a crazy fast real mpc.

I hear you man, i hoped to move UP from my mpc4k but punching in notes and swiff frictionless recording is so crucial i cant deal with any annoying stuff in that proces. I don't really like the touch screen daw type of workflow for midi note management here because hey......that is exactly what we want to move away from right?

So to put it clearly:
On the MPC Live II / X / One:
• In Grid View, the Q-Link knob can move the playhead in 16th increments.
• But hitting a pad at that position does NOT write a note event unless you’re actively in Step Sequencer mode or you record in real time. (with overdub or record selected)
• In other words: the “punch-in at playhead” workflow that is embedded in multiple generations of MPC's is simply not implemented in the modern less sophisticated OS.
• Pads in Grid = trigger audition, not record-to-cursor.

WHY is this not implemented and what do we need to do to have this implemented?? This is not a feature request, its an omission that needs to be solved.

I totally agree, as I come from mpc100 jjos it seems like an incredible omission, what were the developers thinking?

Actually you can do it, although not ideal .
Go into list view
Press record
At this point you can add notes sequentially at intervals determined by the TC setting. Like a traditional step sequencer.
Go into the settings (top right) and turn off auto advance.
Now, you can add events determined by the play head , so select the bars beats (top middle)
The timeline can be moved with the jog wheel press shift for increments at TC setting.
Events can be added whereever you want , chords too.

You can also jog the timeline in grid mode with the qlink then flip to list mode, add the note or even notes, then back to grid mode etc.

This is a feature I really miss it coming from JJOS.

Yes that is possible, but it's unsatisfactory because it doesnt provide a clear visual indication of where in the sequence a note is placed. That is why most MPC users prefer to do this in the grid view of the sequence.

Oh man it almost brings me to tears with frustration that i cant punch in notes with that jogwheel its so crazy. It makes using this machine 100x less effective and even in os 3 they still didnt fix it.

This isn’t a small thing. It’s a big omission. Jogwheel + pad punch-in was standard even on JJOS for the MPC1000, and of course on the 4000. It’s muscle memory for a lot of us, and it’s the essence of sequencing on a hardware drum machine with confidence AND precision.

Did anyone report this is to Akai to fix this like 4 yrs ago?

People asked when the Live and X first came out .

But the request probably slowed down when all the other stuff was missing etc…

It was probably easier when the two main developers use to browse here and were reachable on twitter .

Hopefully everyone in thread submits this request again en masse. The pencil icon is always too finicky except on the X with screen zoomed iin.

I did say it wasn’t ideal

I also said you can jog in the grid , go to list add the note or notes , and repeat accordingly .

i tried every thinkable workaround including this but no, you end up not doing it because it's not an organic workflow.
