Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

I'm really quite confused by the floppy power cable situation in the MPC. Mine came with a dead zip drive and I noticed that 2 out of 4 of the leads were removed on the power cable.

Evidently this was intentional but I don't understand why? And is there any harm in leaving the four lead wires intact if I'm replacing it with a 3.5 floppy or the gotek usb floppy emulator?

They were removed so that 12 volts didn't get thrown into the zip drive.

You only want 5 volts and ground.

Is that the same if I'm putting in a 3.5 floppy drive or do I need to leave all the leads? I guess I'm assuming the Gotek floppy emulator is the same since it is built to replace the drives in PCs?
