Sysex can either be really tough or really straitfoward, depending on the synth you have. What a sysex does is dump ALL the settings from a given synth or module into a sequencer. Later, you can play the dump back into the synth or module, and the settings will be restored. NOTE: BEFORE YOU DO THIS make SURE that you have all your sounds in the module saved. If you F this one up, you will be resetting your synth, and could lose all your parameter settings in your synth. The sysex does not change wave data or samples in your synthesizer, rather, it resets parameters. So, If I make a beat on the MPC, sequencing internal drums and samples, along with MIDI tracks that sequence a Triton, I'll dump sysex FROM the triton to the MPC on an empty sequence. However, if I make a new beat after that with new EDITED sounds from the Triton and didn't dump a sysex, I'm in trouble. When I load up an earlier track, and dump it's sysex BACK to the Triton, it will reset the synth to the state it was in when I made that track. Whatever new sounds I made parameters for in the Triton will be reset. If they weren't there when I did the earlier sysex, they'll be gone. So, once you start doing sysex dumps, do them all the time, for every track you make. You need to find the sysex dump screen in your synth. Usually they are located in 'Global' or 'MIDI' parameter sections of most modules. I have had terrible luck with dumps from the Yamaha QY-70, and the Roland Fantom. But, it was a snap with the Motif and Proteus 2000. Here's how: Set up a new sequence on the MPC, making sure the loop is set to OFF. Turn the tempo down really slow, about 40 BPMs. Usually the dump occurrs on MIDI channel 1. But, you can change the Tx, or Transmit channel, in the synth before you dump. Channel 1 is fine. Set up a channel in the MPC for track 1 in the new sequence. Hit play/start+Record on your MPC, and after the first beat, execute the dump from the synth. In most, there will be a soft button that says "dump" or "execute". It may take a minute or two, it may take a couple of seconds; it varies. Just keep an eye on the synth and it should give a message like "dump Complete" or something. Then just hit stop on the MPC. In the same section as the Tx Dump, there should be a command in any synth for the Rx Dump, or Recieve Dump. Many don't have a special screen; you just play that sequence with the sysex data on it back into the synth or module when you have the main screen showing on the synth. This string of SYStem EXclusive messages should reset the parameters as they were when you made that particular track. The sysex data gets saved in the MPC as normal when you save your sequences. When used properly, you'll always have the right sounds 'saved' with the right beat. Many folks use this method and don't save ANYTHING in thier synth, but you have to play around and test it out. I would save to floppy, Flash ROM, or Computer, depending on what module you have, then try out this method.

on the mp-7 you can also work around sysex by saving all the patches (sounds) in different location and check the program number. then on your mpc, under prg in the main window, you can select the program change number. to know which msb and lsb to use (hit window when on prg) then hit the audition button on the mp-7 on the patch you want to recall and it will give you the msb and lsb to use to change to the correct bank..

Good call. Much quicker. But what do you do when you run out of patch/prgrm banks in your synth? That's right....sysex dump!!
Oh, and for those who have a Fantom and were even slower than me at learning the sysex on that, I finally got it:
Open the menu that gives you the edit list (mutitimbre, patch, system, etc) scroll down and select Data Transfer. Next screen, set the upper left field to Multitimbre, the lower left to Temp+Patch, then the right feild (destination) to MIDI. Then do the dump as described earlier. Make damn sure your timing is OFF in the MPC, and that the echo thru is set to off.
Also, the Fantoms will reject sysex commands comming back IN unless you take the protection setting off.

hy tupro - real good call on the sysex stuff ...

i got a question - or issue - which i d like to solve or discuss - maybe you could help me to clear thisone. i mainly work with my 4k and my virus. theres other midi gear but they are used less and there the issue is less important! ... basically i would like to prepare a set where i need more than the 16 sounds at the virus ...

on the virus i got several midi options to save or dump to my 4k (single, multi, arrangement, and so forth ... ). usually i dump an arrangement from my virus to the 4k and save it alongside with a song on my 4k hd play it back next time and all is fine - an arrangement is basically what other companies call a performance (a multi and the 16 midi patches). so - this is basically enough - for one, two songs and its all good.

but say i wanna do a one hour gig or so. i mean - i can organize my patches at the virus and my tracks within my virus that i could go on without dumps for 2-3 songs but sooner or later i ll be going to use more than those 16 patches. the question is - how to go about that problem best!? - i d like to switch patches at my module without having glitches in sound. and i dont want to stop my sequencer whilst a set to reloadup patches to my virus. imo there should be several ways -
first off i think its best to start out at sequence 1 with an arrangement - so that the first 16 used patches are there and everything is fine for a while. but at a certain point they gotta be changed. another arrangement dump is a bit long to be sended in the middle of a song imo (its about a bar or so ... ) so there gotta be other ways. currently i can think about using pgm changes or dumping single patches when needed! ... or still use arrangement dumps - but then mute my tracks at the virus whilst sendin the stuff there ... and resample everythin for those bars.

what you think were the best method to go about it? ... i think sending sysex (esp. for the arrangement) at over 100 bpms is an issue too ... i tried the pgm way once but that messed up everything at my 4k - dunno why but i guess its coz i use pgm changes to change multis within the 4k (dunno what i did wrong that time - question: are pgm changes when used withnin the 4k for multi changes a problem (conflict) to be used for external gear to switch sinlge patches there?) ... dunno i have never really organized my stuff that well yet but would like to find a way ... anyone can give some hints?

Word, I get what's going on mang. Maybe some cats who are a little
deeper with the Virus. My man who uses the Original VirusB, suggests using program changes. Now, I dunno if you gotta do a program change for each channel to make each track in your sequence flip it's own change to the Virus in it's 'multimode', or if it's one per multimode.
You would know that, and also, money is gonna call me later and add on to this. Have you tried the sysex? Your totally right, higher BPM counts are questionable, but give it a whirl, it's quick enough to try out.
I know someone on the forum got much more for you too...

Hi alto, can you change slots individually with a single sysex message without interrupting the audio from the other slots? If you can I would save an arrangement or multi or what it's called in the beginning of the set and change the single slots individually when needed.

Otherwise program changes might work better in a live set.

By glide Sat Apr 02, 2005 12:16 am
the way I'm setting up a live set is to use the same Multi on my Microwave which has 8 parts, and just use prg changes within that multi (ie don't change multis only programs within that multi, now since a multi containes fx setting in the Virus(?) it might be a problem? dunno

but studio work and live are two completely diffirent gigs, I'll resample groups of sounds eq'ed and prosessed for a live gig but in studio everything has its own track,

Plan B would be to just play a pattern that changes the multi on the virus but does not play any sounds from the virus,
like prehaps a 8bar sample drumbreak from the 4k before jumping to the next pattern filled with sounds from the virus, as I doupt you'll ever get a flawless glitch free program change on any synth that uses FX setting, but my (no FX) Nord and Microwave do almost flawless patch changes on the fly but flawless enough to play live??> well I'll have to get back to you on that one,

but whith 16 parts on the Virus you should be able to send prg changes on just the 9-16 sounds that are coming up in the next track while the song plays sounds 1-8 in the set, as like you said you only use 1/3 of the 16 parts in a song...

now if FX setting are stored via Multi and not per patch on the Virus I'd say you'd need to go with a PLan B although great FX can be born via glitchy multi changes

hy guys - niceone - thanx tupro, bllep and glide - all good calls. 4k and virus is a dope couple – so i m sure is yours - the aim for me is bangin them live.

i ll add about my 4k - virus interaction and comend to your hints. might sound as organized chaos for you ... for me it worx quite good atm ... so feel free to see things as hints or not ... yo - and hints and coments on mine as your setups are very welcome.

for me one thing is clear - if you wanna bang a longer set your shyt s gotta be organized and imo on 4k and virus besides makin music one has to save his ish and know whaz where ... i m not good at it ... i had times were i saved all my stuff at the virus and the other modules, than i had times i saved all centrally at my 4k. meanwhile i save as much as possible, double and tripple ...

most important imo once a while is a total dump which gets saved on my 4k harddisc. folderstructrue - virus - dumps – than some folder s like total, banka, bankb and within that some files named ie: 20050402 (btw: big up to americans and all the other ones and congrats to their style of writing dates - took me almost 30 years to find out on thisone!) this way i finally find the patches i did last chrismas ... such folders should be there for every external module and dumps be done once a while ... i m lazy there!

4k: within the sets, songs and sequences there are places where i save arrangements and lately - the sinlge patches and multis – so that if ya need things they are right there. all muted.

also important imo is the structure within the 4k: at os 1.60 i almost had it - 4k - virus interected great. and dunno bout you - but i change my workinhabits on the 4k with every new os and every now and than i run into some unexpected ish! ... ie: os 1.70: since 1.70 multi changes at the 4k worx great - so i set them as dafault, every 4k sequnce now plays its own 4k multi - switched by program change on track 120 on int b 16. actually it would be nice having the same for the virus but that doesnt really work the same. before 1.70 therefore i used program changes mainly for switching programs at the 4k within a multi and at the virus to change patches also within a multi - and besides some issues it all worked quite smooth (check this http://www.mpc-forums.com/viewtopic.php ... irus+multi ) ... it tells a bit how virus patches can and multis can't be changed - at least i havent found yet a way to really change multis at the virus. dunno ... there are ways - workarounds – resampling, sending arrangement dumps ... at the end ya can always do it manually - ... on sequence 10 ... but is that ... how to say ... nice?

anyways - you can do things differently. meanwhile i have reorganized all for 1.70. my default sequence now has over 100 tracks set per default - tracks 1 til 32 (banks a and b from track mute window) default to 4ks internal sampler, tracks 33 to 96 (banks c to f) default to the 16 midichannels at the virus, those outta the track mute spectrum are for mididumpin stuff for the other external gear. and track 120 changes my multi in the 4k. 4ks sampler and my virus is finally quite organized too (dont wanna talk too much bout 4k sampler structure since it might be out of topic here... and i guess everyone in here has 4k organized differently ... ) but virus now has ch. 1, 2, basses, 3,4 303s, 5-8 pads and keys, 9-12 strings and 2 nicones, arpeggios for some more infected 303s 13-16-stuff like noise, vocoder, and filter. each channel gets 4 tracks from a 4k sequence on startout. so a virus arrangement in seq 1 here always starts out with those sounds and that structure ... anyways glide i hear ya in splitting sounds up in 1-8 and 9-16 here ... however somehow i think y'all suggest using pgm changes and thats my favorite too. pgm ch is what i used before and i think for the virus in most cases its still best. (single dumps might work just the same though). i think i only screwed up things in my 4k itself lately - i think i been sendin to many pgm changes whilst 1. my 4k multi was on the wrong receive channel (multi, f3>midi, than 3rd column midi) - and 2. i guess i just have to set pgm changes to off for the parts in a multi ... multi changes anyways on int 16b ... dunno - i gotta try those things a bit more and see what worx best here .... sysex – arrangement and single dumps at high bpms have to be tested too ... (i guess they will stop other sounds though - dunno). my favorite for now remains arrangement dump at startout and pgm change later on. yo - fxs at the virus are an issue too – reverb/delay on the kb there is one for a multi. the new one has one per part ...

anyways – kb is great... since i have reorganized my stuff - the 16 sounds at the virus are more than a single arrangement imo ... the need to change stuff is gettin less and i havent run into it for a while. ... once the 303s are runnin and the compressors are set - there s not much need to change em ...

yo and studio and live are too different things ... i hear ya ... for me basically: local off at home and local on life ... yo – we can go on on thiseone ... the thread started 2 years ago only ... ... ad your setups ...

Well ok a quick rundown: My studio is rather on a small side. I've allways tried to "downsize" it to just what I need, I use to have a bunch of stuff but now I get by with:

MPC4000 the boss & the brain, triggering mutes patterns step sequences and sounds along with some qlink at my disposal

TeeBee303 MK3 (hey made in your home town Alto) I do my Solo lead guitar on it :)

TR808 I love it but I doupt I'll be taking it out live, depends but in all honesty some clever programming on the 4k + my synths along with some exsternal analouge prossessing can virtually be the 808 even though the pA will not pump as much raw sonics,

Microwve1 w programmer needs a limiter/compressor on its outs as its so wild, I have the access programmer dunno if I'd bring that out live might just sample it although the charghter and analouge filters cry out for a crowd,

Nord Lead2, so solid!! YEs going live all the way with this one,
I aslo have a Nova which I was going to sell to get some more RA but it has a very cool sound, its just that I hate the filter sweeping on VA's they sounds so plastik although I'll admit the filters on the Nord, Q and Virus all do a hell of a lot better than Novation LP'z, but the Nova can sound huge and sometimes very oldschool, has a great Square wave usable FX and live playabillity (solo/mute) I use it for electronik drums alot aswell

Ensoniq DP4 makes all my sounds sound better, it stayes in the studio I'll resample to the 4k for live, dunno I might pick up one of thouse cheap hands in the air fx units for live,

MFC42 a great value very wet sounding analouge filter with great flanger and distortion needs a limiter on its outs as it could blow off eardrums left and right in the club, a live set will always have a dedicated sub mix of sounds going though the MFC (something I'd have to plan in depth for a show

O1v 24ch digital mixer, bought orginally for live work (sene memory& all) but I don't like the sound of it and if anything I think an analouge desk is better suited for live, as I'll constantly be fooling around with levels and eq as I go, each club/venue has a differeant sound and haveing hands on access to all levels & EQ (mind you the desk will have a sertain live structure to its channels eq's ect that I just modify a bit), but this also creates a live feel/mix that gives that live sound

in all hoesty my song will change quite dramatikly once in live state even as far as being completely remixes/re-formatted for live, since I'll be resampling alot I get new Ideas and get into working a grove rather than working the song in its "arranged" status, a song of mine also usually takes up more than half the pattern memmory so its selfexplained why I have to work it from the grove angle

I've been away from my gear for way to long, altough its given me time to discover the 4k, dunno musicly I'm shifting alot, I need to truly find myself in music/sound as I still haven't found what I'm looking for (although I'm getting close ...very close

forgiv all the typos ..

Guys, this is a really cool thread, nice to see such good input... Glide and others, if you want to do a multi change on the virus or other modules, this has to happen on the global midi channel. If you want to do a multi change
and the multi is on multi bank B then it's the same msb and lsb as for program change but on the global midi channel and then just use the normal program change from the mpc main window. just turn the program change in the synth to off to avoid conflicts of any sort.

talking about virus, I purchased a Virus Access Ti in december but it still hasn't arrived cause they are doin the last beta testing to make sure they don't have to release os updates. A couple of cool things about it is that
patches saved as part of a multi are stored in a different memory and don't overwrite the original patches, 1 effect (reverb and delay) per part, not as part of the multi so really cool if you just want to use program changes. I can't wait for it to arrive to see how well it intergrates to my live set. Also it integrates to sequencers as a vst (meaning total recall each time you open a song in a sequencer)...

peace

andy

dear mute - some brieve thanx only for now - your last post just flipped my first multi on the kb ever! ... loooooool ... its 2 years i m after thisone. ... easy and damn naiiicccee! THANK YOU SOOO MUCH! ... yo - thanx for this thread - its gettin better and better - i ll just flip some multis and arrangements and come back to it later ...
