Respected Akai Users and Technical Seniors,

I have acquired the latest MPC Live 3 unit, boss. It is a fantastic machine, but the Main Output Volume Knob is creating much headache only. I request all experts to kindly review this matter for me.

The issue is fully specific, yaar. When I am doing a proper performance fade (turning the knob towards minimum), the volume goes down very quietly, which is fine. But then, right at the very end, before it hits absolute zero, it is giving one sudden and violent digital cutoff. The sound just disappears, thak!

The Technical Analysis (Please Advise):

This behavior is NOT a smooth, logarithmic fade down to true $0\text{V}$. It seems like the software is implementing an abrupt mute threshold (I am estimating around $-60\text{ dB}$) instead of allowing the voltage to decay smoothly. This sudden cutoff makes the knob useless for genuine, performative fade-outs.

My request is for the technical experts only. Is my unit's DAC unit faulty (a QC issue), or is this specific digital cutoff a design choice by Akai for the Live 3?

Kindly check your own Live 3 units. Do you have a proper, smooth, continuous fade to full silence, or are you also getting this sudden thak moment? Must check and inform, please. Your help is very much needed!

To the user who suggested the ticket: I fully intend to raise a ticket with Akai, but I must confirm if this is a universal design choice or a unique hardware defect on my specific unit first. Submitting a ticket for a design flaw is unnecessary, as the fix will be firmware-based for everyone.

To the user who is also curious: Exactly! This is the core of the problem. We need hard data from other owners.

Final Request to All MPC Live 3 Owners (Please Check Your Hardware):

We need to settle this. Can you perform one quick test for the community? Slowly, with attention, turn your Main Volume Knob down from a moderate level to the minimum stop.

Does the sound smoothly and continuously fade all the way down to absolute silence, or does it snap digitally silent near the very end of the knob's rotation?

Confirming this behavior on other units is the fastest way to get a clear answer and either confirm a widespread issue or isolate my unit as faulty. Please check and inform us. Thank you.

The core finding is clear: If this abrupt digital mute snap is universal across all units, it confirms a severe functional design flaw in the MPC Live 3's core output control.

Akai/inMusic must issue a formal statement immediately. This kind of acknowledged design failure severely impacts the commercial value and the Suggested Retail Price (SRP) of the product, often leading to retailers offering significant price adjustments or discounts to keep the unit rather than processing returns.

We require an official resolution, either via firmware or an acknowledgment of the functional limitation.

Thank you for the suggestion. I appreciate the workaround.

However, automating a volume fade, while functional, is not a suitable solution for a high-end, dedicated control surface like the MPC Live 3. The main volume knob is intended for real-time, performative control.

The issue is the functional integrity of the physical hardware itself. If a core knob cannot perform a basic logarithmic fade without a digital snap, the product has a design flaw that requires an official statement and solution from Akai/inMusic. The user should not be forced to use a software workaround for a fundamental hardware failure.

my force does something similar, I think it cuts around -58db. I saw this in other machines as well. I think it is the norm when you have an D/A conversion. I play live quite often and it was never a problem. All venues have a F.O.H. Mixer which lets you hook your mpc to a channel and you can fade out from there via master out knob or fader channel.

Where does Akai's make this claim?

It seems more like they want you keep the main vol knob at max & do all your gain staging & volume changes in the box & use macros for gobal volume changes like someone mentioned.

Me & others on the MPC & Force main vol knob is scratchy when moving. It won't pick up when resampling, but if your tracking out it'll be a mess.

Just to chime in - the master volume on my Key 61 goes from 0db to a trillion db with 2mm of movement on the master.

Generally I don't mess with the master volume on any of my equipment - set is and forget it and use mixers, faders, all the other bits and pieces we have available.

Doesn't help you, OP, but there seems like there are some viable workarounds?

Based on the evidence from the MPC Live 3, Force, and Key 61, I have established a dual, systemic failure in the Master Volume Control:

Analog Component Failure: The potentiometer is confirmed to be a low-quality component that introduces scratchy noise when moved, making it unusable for real-time adjustments or clean recording ("tracking out").

Digital Calibration Failure: The volume curve is fundamentally broken, resulting in either the digital snap to mute or hyper-sensitivity.

Dismissing Workarounds and Mandating a Solution
I appreciate the suggestions for workarounds (automation), but I find that accepting software fixes or external reliance is unacceptable for a professional machine. Specifically, relying on a Front of House (FOH) mixing engineer to perform a basic, smooth volume fade is an abdication of the product's core functionality.

The required solution is to decouple these controls. Akai must abandon the cheap analog potentiometer and either use a superior digital encoder (like on the Roland SP-404 MKII) or reassign the existing Data Wheel to control the software main output Volume only.

But if that design was implemented, it forces the Final Digital Output Gain (which controls the file export volume) and the Monitor Volume (for safe listening) which creates the bouncing problem: to ensure a clean 0dB export, the user is forced to turn the data wheel up, resulting in deafening playback.

So then a Final Digital Output Gain must be added and locked at 0dB (Unity Gain) in the software, much like Logic Pro has a main output and master fader.

Akai/inMusic must issue a formal statement immediately. This combination of acknowledged component failure and unacceptable functional design severely impacts the commercial value and the Suggested Retail Price (SRP) of the MPC Live 3.
