I've been working on trying to put together something for a live performance that would last about 15 minutes.

I started on fw 3.5 and have multiple sequences. I can use "Next Seq" to go between the various sequences. If I want to mute a specific track I can go to track mute or track mix.

I've upgraded to 3.6 + extras to get the Clip array feature. If I go to "Clip Array" I just get one row with my sequence in there.

Having used Ableton Live for a number of years, I am interested in at least trying to see whether Clip view would work better for this. I already understand there is a danger in conflating an MPC Sequence to a Live Session etc.

I understand that Clip View is some variation on or additional structure on top of "Arrangement" view, so I suspect I might be able to do this by picking a "Master" sequence and then appending all the other sequences to the end one by one and then coming back to isolate the individual sections as clip scenes.

It sounds like a lot of work and I'd be willing to undertake it assuming it would work properly.

Anyone tried this?

I made an video showing how you can emulate Ableton's Arrangement/Session view workflow using the clip-matrix & your imagination. There more info in the video description, but basically you divide the matrix up into different sections using a dummy row of blank clips. The top is section is the clip-bank & where you store your ideas. The next is the Combo-Bank section to store any combination of clips or clips that you converted into 1 clip. The next section is for song/beat before you record it to the arrangement - you can use a another dummy row to make a new song.

I hope this helps...

Will check it out.

This old but the concept is still good. Most people if not all, starts sequencing the on scene/row#1 & to me it just gets messy & limiting trying to build a song structure before building up a good amount of ideas/ building blocks first. Let simple technique will let you have a dedicated space just for patterns/clips without having to worry about composition & order. Find order in the chaos.

I put more info in the viddo description. Like I mentioned above, your using the matrix in a unconventional way to manually create sections for different things. The first section is just to store clips as building blocks. Then you copy clips from there into another to build up your "pre-arrangement" before you record it into the actual arranger if you even want to.

Now with the new Follow Actions for the rows, we can more arrangering in the matrix. I was working on a new video, but then the new OS updates for the Force happened & change my whole system for the better, but now I redo everything, but I need time to learn it.

Been trying for weeks to get my head around the clip matrix, I have sequence 1 and sequence 2, I can switch between them in main view, but can’t seem to add them to clip matrix, also can’t add them to song mode because it won’t let me select sequence 2 for some reason

I think you have to choose one or the other (Clips or Sequences). Practically speaking anyway. Looks like a single project can have both sequences and a clip matrix but it's not straightforward to move data between them.

For the time being I chose the Clip Matrix as it has somewhat better visual feedback on "where are we" for Live performance.

Now that I have tipped over to using Clip Matrix exclusively, I find that Sequences get in the way - they are just a trap where I occasionally erroneously record notes... Or am I missing something about their purpose in a Clip Matrix workflow ?

Remember that at the moment anyway, using "Set Tempo" in Clip Matrix will cause audio recording to fail, e.g. Record Clips to Arrangement. Even just trying to record clips into a single row I got the error and failure but I went into List Edit/Tempo and deleted any tempo events there. I do not know what causes the tempo events to appear there.
