A track file (XTD, XTY) will reference samples in a separate trackData folder rather than having them 'loose' in the same location (as was the case with XPM files). I don't think Akai will make expansions with XPM files anymore, it's now considered a legacy format.

thanks. it's weird that there appears to be a "Preview" subfolder with just the wav files but also doesn't seem to appear in the standalone MPC browser to . . . actually preview them

The previews folder contains the previews you hear when tapping on a kit. It’s hidden in the actual browser, you’re not supposed to load the preview files. This was also the case with mpc2, it’s how we’ve always created the browser auditions in expansions

I only just recently started using the preview option :WTF: (I don’t buy expansions or kits sorry tutor lol)
It’s a great workflow enhancement for drum kits. Don’t sleep on it like I did people!
