Getting your name out

How do you let people know you make beats? All my friends/family/coworkers know but I need to start working with artists or at least get with a local producer who can teach me some shit.

I don't want to just start giving out beat cds and let people jack the shit.

How do yall spread the word? Going to shows and networking? Stuff like that? Probably a dumb question if I know the answer

I just came to the realization that I really need to start making a game plan. This shit is all I have right now and I really wanna start getting serious. My beats may not be the best shit in the world but I feel it's cool enough to start working with some local cats. I think the experience can only make me better. I need to start hustling this shit for real.

Maybe start talking to some of the DJ's in the local clubs and maybe they'll slip one of your track in every now and then.

not sure what the scene is like up there. San Jose mike be a easier scene to break into since there's not a whole lot going on. There's DJ's out here using playlists from like 1987.

you got any pirate radio stations goin on there? get on air (or online radio) and get to know all the other djs you can, radio and club. also seek out aaalllll our old (school?) people that are promoters or producers or artists or whateva... make sure they know your name at the end of all your conversations and always call them by their name.

if you can get yourself on radio then you can offer other people promotion... itsa good way to get people to remember you: give em more than one reason - aside from as a producer, designer etc. get em to think of you as a helpful, good-to-know person.

put an ad on craigslist, seriously. say you make beats and you're looking to collaborate with lyricists etc. i got more work from craigslist than anywhere else a few years ago. nothing huge, but i made some great contacts and got some stuff out there. craigslist is huge in your area, it started in SF actually.

**** that craigslist was a good idea. Already the next day I get an email from someone wanting to do a 7 track EP all with my beats.

Yeah apparently he knows Digital Underground and Rankin'Scroo (never heard of 'im). He keeps saying shit like he has radio and label connects. I think he's gassin me up but at least I'm getting paid for some beats.

it is a free community portal kind of site. it was started by one guy (Craig) as a place for people around San Francisco to find jobs, apartments, friends etc through the web. it has become huge and now has sections for cities all over the world. here in NYC it is the #1 place to look for jobs, places to live, hookers, music gear, you name it.
it's 100% free.
