Yo, just bought the XL with 1.14 os and floppy drive. Seller gave me also a CF IDE 40 pin drive with nice enclosure to install inside of mpc with 2gb compatible cf card.
Should i install 1.20 from floppy before CF drive installation? or leave 1.14 as is and hope for the best ?

It will work but you need OS 1.20 installed.

I would suggest saving your allowance a bit longer and buy a better card reader though.

It might also work with os1.14, that one gives you the possibility to create partitions in case of large memory cards whereas os 1.20 has omitted this functionality.

10+ yrs ago, I extensively tested this functionality with scsi4samplers (really positive experience working with him).

I had a maxed out orange 2kxlse2, that orange 2kxlse2 now belongs to mpcstuff!
IDE is not hot swap.
Atapi is hot swap w/ same connection as ide.
This adapter will will work, use either os 1.14, 1.14c or 1.20
but functionality is as pt3r described.
1.20 will address 1gb cards w/ 1 partition.
My advice is 1.14 using multiple partitions.
There IS a 40 pin keyed port on the 2kxl motherboard, NOT on classic 2k..

What is a better card reader that is hot swap, is not insanely overpriced by some MPC boutique website, and is not ZuluSCSI?

Thanks. These ARE Zuluscsi though? Which are not hot swappable per se as you need to power off the MPC to use the card reader function.

Ideally I would like to buy an atapi sd card drive to replace my Zuluscsi as I am not fond of how it operates.

bluescsi is hotswappable on my 2kclassic. scsi2sd requires scsi ID to be toggled briefly to refresh folder structure after card swap on my 2kxl. neither on requires a reboot

Right well I put in a non swappable cf card reader as I like using the card on my 1000 as well…
