And I **** hate it lol

It looks too much like a toy. Part of what makes the niche small sampler market successful is being able to create a small piece of hardware that feels and looks like it belongs in a serious studio session. Its a very difficult design needle to thread. This looks too much like a "miniature" knockoff version of older MPCs instead of a small pocket sized serious sampler that utilizes every inch of the hardware for real creative purposes. Putting a gimmicky wrist pad on it instead of additional tactile buttons etc tells you that they dont understand what makes these type of units attractive.

If this is real, which it looks like it is, it will be a huge failure in my opinion. Essentially a $400 mpc "figuring'

It cant fail this is what they want. The market the 404bwhich i never spent one second researching is a hit for the same reason the mpc sample will be portability with more features.. USB c for i phone and more ..

I mean... if the workflow can push projects into the MPC One/Live/X/Key series straight up... it'll probably go like hot cakes. If it's powerful enough to use drum kits/key groups from the bigger brother (barring some FX that might not make the cut)... it becomes a very handy device for the road.

We'll see though, I'd consider the 3 knob workflow to be a mistake... you want 4 knobs for programming envelopes... especially ADSR stuff... and a single q-link means having to page a lot through settings as the alternative... perhaps the screen is a touchscreen... but for this price range I doubt it.

That said... everything is a compromise at this size... and while I think the Bento is probably a better layout at this size by and large... if Akai can shrink down the interface without messing up the interface too much they very well could be on to something.

Didn't see anything around polyphony, but I figure 32 mono *might* be plenty for a lot, and something we've lived with since MPC 500, SP404 mk2... etc. Could probably limit the ram... and having a micro sd card slot will be a big deal. If the USB-C port functions to send audio/midi like the Live 3/XL... it'll upsize the device a lot for me.

I'll put this in the "cautiously optimistic" that it's a usable device.

I think they just are trying to make what some have said they wanted, a stripped back, no touch screen, simple mpc with no downloaded content or anything.. this must be the thing that guy said would come a long time ago. Remember when someone was saying they were working on a cheap portable simple mpc?

If this is real Jpeg is gonna get on his bs telling everyone to, "Kiss da ring!"

He is the 1st person I thought of after I read the thread's title. As a matter-of-fact, I checked to see if he started the thread

They already did. It's called MPC XL!

Nope! Not even close, but its better than the X. The XL 16 horizontal knobs is nice tho.

The Force 8x8 pad layout makes it more advanced & faster dealing the clip-matrix. It has a dedicated selecte, copy, delete buttons which copy & paste or delete clips in real-time, instead of going thru the slow ass window menu & the pads layout lines up with the screen matrix.

Also the Pad Grid FX uses the drum pads, which are velocity & pressure sensitive so you can assign a parameter like volume & have it fade up or down based on pressure like a volume fader. The gen² 16 step buttons aren't velocity/pressure sensitive & you only use 16 at a time. The Force let's you use the all 4 banks of 16 Pad FX at once & you can you can use the pads as a 4 octave piano.

We need a MPC64 for those who want that Force workflow & all the gen² power & a redesigned drum pads to take at advantage of the MPCe tech on a 8x8 layout.

thing is, the mpc60 mk2 is da ugliest of all mpc's

so the fact that Akai chose that style for the retro nod for this new product is bad.

they could of modelled it on the mk1 60 or the 3k for better asthetics

better still why did they not simply ressurect the og mpc studio designs and add a colour screen, audio interface, media card slot, etc that would of sold warehouse loads more than this design.

It’s only what they want until they realize how limited it is. Look at the 404, Lofi 12, Roland users. They all are constantly asking for new features lol. They say they want a simple sampler but hate using them because it doesn’t do what ableton does. I’m not talking about real users I’m talking about people who buy these things thinking they’ll sound like Dilla

I’d put money on some of the first responses being things like “it doesn’t warp sample” “where’s the stem separation??” “No audio tracks?” “No mpc60 converters!!”

I don’t trust Akai to nail the landing. My guess it’ll be too stripped back in feature and workflow

*correction. It actually does have warp lol. Just took a close look at the pad shift options.

This is what makes me think it’s more gimmick than a well thought out mini sampler like the lofi 12 etc. They don’t want a portable and powerful unit to compete against the one, live etc.

But we’ll see if they actually spent significant money and time on developing a well thought out powerful intuitive workflow.

I have a 404 but I use it to sample percussion thru it to my force lol. Only thing I like about that thing are the effects.

This and performance is what most people use the 404 for in my experience
