Keygroups - 3.9 Bug or am I being dumb?

Trying out the wavetables etc in 3.9 - lots of fun!

One issue I have is that when I have more than one keygroup, I'm expecting to be able to edit the filters (and other settings) individually for each key group - I don't have the 'all' key group setting active, I'm selecting from teh top line 'key group' number (e.g. 1 or 2) - when I change between the keygroups, I'm expecting to be able to chang the settings such as cutoff filter type etc, so each key group has a different setting. But changing the value in one key group seems to affect (sync) the setting in the other keygroups(s) - I'm not pressing pads or keys either (which might auto-trigger a kg=all setting) - does it on my Live 3 in standalone, and on the plug-in macOS version - it looks like the filters is per track instrument effectively, and not per-key group? I no longer have older version to compare, but my recollection is that this is different to previous versions?

In MPC3 keygroups, you cannot set different filter settings for individual keygroups, the settings are applied to all keygroups. If you need a filter per keygroup, hit the 'legacy' button at the top of the keygroup track, but you'll lose the advanced features and revert back to MPC2 keygroup features.

Thanks, I reached the same conclusion after a while.. It's a major limitation IMHO - a massive loss compared to the legacy mode and very significantly reduces the capability of the 'advanced' mode.

The manual doesn't spell this out at all either - the implication seems to be just that features were added to advanced mode, not that a pretty fundamental feature was taken away.

With the legacy mode, can almost achieve something like Roland partials - but still quite limited - more limited than a Roland D50 from 1987! (OK a bit unfair due to the additional sample ram, but d50 could have different pitch, filter and amp envelopes for different partials ' advanced' mode forces one set of envelopes, filters, etc for the whole track/patch!)

I was hoping to translate some Zencore patches, but I guess it's back to just multi-sampling like it's 1999...

I haven't tried that but it seems strange given that the new software is for extending the capabilities of the G2 range. I wonder if this is a software pause to aid reliability and not cause crashes and whether it is something that will be ironed out in a future update.

Complex instruments may utilise entirely different sounds/groupings each of which may need independent settings. For example, you could build a multisampled piano with standard sustain notes, key release sounds, a synth layer (for overlaying string or pad sounds) and a noise layer (for adding lofi noise). Each of these groups would require different envelope, filter settings, lfo etc, not just keytracking controllable stuff. For example the string layer would need independent amp env, filter, lfo, etc (e.g. to create a gentle evolvling pad sound).

Some workarounds would be possible with mod matrix and use of a filter plugin, but legacy keygroups would give more control (while of course sacrificing other features). So it depends on the instrument, but advanced keygroups are not always the better option.
