vOCODER!

Anyone have any suggestions vocoder programs and how they use them in their studio?

This guy does a real good tutorial on the Vocoder and he

Cubase comes with a vocoder VST. I've got a couple of cool Micro modular vocoder patches, but that's hardware of course.

A vocoder needs two signals, one for the voice, drumbeat or whatever you want to "vocode", then you need another signal to modulate the first with, typically some sort of synth line (clean sawtooth usually sounds nice).

Some vocoder plugins accept midi input and generate the synth line themselves. Others do not.

before i got me a hardware vocoder i used that Akai D.C. Vocoder Plugin:


(50-band digital vst vocoder with 6-voice osc carrier)

sound's nice, but it's still a plugin, so i got the Roland SVC-350 (analog 11-band Vocoder with carrier input) now i'm still searching for the perfect analog synthesizer to use as carrier.

using this one live on stage is a pleasure, with a footswitch you can control the ensemble & hold feature ... i used the Roland SH-2 as carrier, and while i played the lead parts with it - i shouted my vocals all over the place ... think i don't have used it in the studio yet.

some sound editors have the ability to modulate 2 sound sources, although not in realtime like a synth.. you can achieve the desired effect with the right knowledge. i know the synth in logic can be used as a vocodertoo

there's a vocoder on the micron its pretty tight. all you have to do is plug the mic into the Audio In and play the keys.

Thanx! Well actually I have a number of VST but from time to time I try the one in Cubase and ORANGE VOCODER, but I never get anything I really like. In the presets there aren't any real like industry settings and you know how it is when you are in a session with no time to waste. Do you guys have any suggestions for presets. I am looking for radio standard stuff ala ROGER TROUTMAN, DAFT PUNK, etc. thanx again!

check out the paia website - you can build your own hardware Vocoder for not too much money. There are mods to make it more intelligable. Otherwise I like the ELectrix Warp Factory - had one, sold it, regret selling it.

As a carrier - I love the Alpha Juno - I always had the best results with that and my Pro-1. oh, and a SM58...

Polysynths are generally the best to use with a vocoder, you need mad harmonics.
