grind date snare...

hey...

I pulled out the new De La again, and I can't stop listening to the title track. I've heard the Yes song that they sampled for the track a million times in high school from my stoner friends (don't feel bad for me...ok...maybe a bit). I've been trying to get that snare sound...and I can't seem to get it right...any ideas...?

I don't know this album & the samples on the link seem to be in the wrong order. Clicking on #2 for a RealPlayer samples brings up the title "Grind Date" so I hope this is the right track.

It sounds like a classic, early '80s drum machine beat, like someone has programmed an Oberheim DX to play "The Big Beat" break. Check out some early Run DMC tracks like "Sucker MCs" for this sound. I think it is layered handclaps with the fat snare from one of these drum machines. That is what you might be missing ..... that it is more a big handclap sound than a snare.

If you asked me the Pete Rock's snare I couldn't help you, and maybe nobody could...

Yes in that case layer a snare and layer claps... slow down the claps.
