motf rack --> mpc2000xl, ---> protools

Hey whats up, i have posted this before, and have seen it posted, but never really got a good response -- I have an mpc200xl, an protools M-Box, a motif rack, allthe necesserray cables, and a 10 channel mixer. I would like to know where to connect which cables, in order to be able to use sounds from the Motif, triggering with the MPC, BUT YET AT THE SAME TIME BE ABLE TO SEQUENCE - i know it has to do with midi channels, but i have a feeling my cabiling is messed up -thank you for your time and i hope you understand this post!

MPC midi out A to Motif midi in> Motif midi out to MPC midi in 1. Run all audio outs to audio inputs on your mixer and run the stereo outs on your mixer to the inputs on the MBox.

Just in case you're doing something else wrong here's a short step by step(I should add that I don't have the Motif rack and these suggestions are from using one a few times and how my rack equipment works):

1. Load up a drum program and record a drum track on track 1.

2. Cursor over to "01-Track-01" in the main screen and change it to "02-Track-02">cursor down to "DRUM1" and scroll left to "MIDI"> cursor over to "OFF" and change it to "1A-Device01"> On the Motif rack press "MULTI", this will allow you to setup the Motif as a multi-timbral device. You can use the MPC or the Motif interface to change the patches but you'll have to use the Motif interface to change the banks. Select a bass patch(or whatever) on channel 1 and record a bassline(or whatever). Repeat this step for as many tracks as you need making sure to always use the right midi channels. If you want to sequence more "sample" tracks just make sure DRUM 1: OFF (or DRUM2,3,4 : OFF) is selected in the track menu.

3. When you're all done sequencing turn off the loop function on the MPC and select a free midi channel if you have one left and rewind your sequence all the way to the beginning> set the Motif rack to send sys ex and set up the MPC to recieve a midi dump> press and HOLD the "REC" button on the MPC and trigger the midi dump from the Motif rack, when the Motif has completed the dump let go of the "REC" button. Save everything as you normaly would and when you want to load that sequence back up the MPC will tell the rack what voices and evrything else to load and you're good to go.

When I track everything in Pro Tools I erase all the sys ex data from the sequence cuz I like to get as strong a signal as possible when tracking and with the sys ex data still there it will keep the volume at whatever it was at when you saved it. For example, if you have a soft string track lacing the background of the sequence you'll want to turn that up when tracking so you're recording a strong signal, once you have the track in PT you can bring it back down in the mix. You always want to get a strong signal cuz the weaker the signal you record the more noise you introduce if you have to bring the levels up in PT.

Im explaing my set up. I have the same thing expect i use cubase instead of protools. If u got questions leave em in that thread

classic I watched your tut. Nice explanation of the setup but how do you the midi sequencing. That the part that's a b----

I'm sticking sysex load at the beginning of each sequence to boot up the instrument patches but it pauses every time you load it.

Im assuming u mean MIDI sequcing with the MPC. WEll all i do is just save the name of the voice as the device name

Lets say i have a piano on MIDI track 4 on my mpc. Remember each MIDI port can have 16 tracks so u can have 16 simltanously things on one MIDI cable.

So the piano will like like this

4A-device 4

Well the piano voice number in my motif rack is 1-63-0
So i name the midi tack om the mpc the voice name in the motif

So now it will look like this
piano
4A-1-63-0

Also i can save the program midi information on my rack as a mutli. I usually name it the same name as the beat on the MPC

so all i do when i want to play the beat is load up the sequnces and aps on the MPC. Load up the corresponging muti on my rack and im good to go.

* i save the mutli's from my rack to my computer via usb

I never TRUELY knew what a sys ex dump was until I read that post. Thanks alot man, I always knew saving between multiple pieces had to be Easier than I always imagined.

where is the system dump thing on the motif es7??

oh snap!! i was thinking of adding a motif rack to my set up also, just got my digi 001... everything i need to know is already in this place!! thanks 4 answering my questions before i even asked!! LOOL!!!

please can u tell me how to do this on the motif es7 please as it seems different for sum reason
