Actually' the pic stays; I get down like no other on any mpc up to and including the 4000.

Ocean:
It is going to be a vst-i and and audio unit. (pc and mac osx)
No it will not have a sequencer.
It is going to be the exact model of the current vz8 sampler (same sampler engine used in the mpc 4000 as well)
The mpd16 pad hooks up via usb and shows up as a midi device controller. U can use it with any software sequencer.
I didn't give up on the mpc 4000; I outgrew it. Meaning; the unit took me but so far and i'm using the computer heavily now. I don't like sequencing on the computer; the mpc feel can be accomplished but with the assistance of a midi note editor available in every sequencer; the mpc groove templates aren't perfect so you have to edit the sequences; but after they are edited you can create your own groove templates (yay!!!)

The Pc/Mac platform advantage
Sample storage and performance; Serial ata drives and scsi drives give top notch performance. Useful for really tricked out pads and synth sounds.
You can put up to 4 gigs of ram in your PC; now 8 gigs of ram and better (mac g5 available now and soon the amd 64 systems)

Your beat slicing appz like Recycle are really accurate and you can export those slices as an .akp file (akai s100/3000 program file) which you can then import to your Virtual Z8/ Exs24/Mach 5/Gigastudio 160/Halion/Kontakt/Battery you can also export as .rex and really flip a loop sample in reason (reverses, individual filters for each slice etc...)

Effects: Waves platinum bundle Tc Native etc.... too may to name; these are very high quality studio effects.

A single Amd xp 2400+ to the 3200+ with 4 gigs ram can handle a monster soft setup with efx. vst-i's etc....
A dual 64 bit 2ghz G5/or dual 64 bit opteron/ amd 64 with 8 megs ram is insane. Emagic's logic was demoed in a 64 bit dual environment and there were over 32 tracks of audio with efx along with vst-i's running without reaching half the processors power.

The only disadvantage is how good hardware sequencing is on any mpc. That's it. I outgrew the 4000. Timestretching and pitch shifting vocals for remixing is a task suited for a pc/mac not the mpc 4000; the 4000 is adequate but slow and yes it's good at timestretching loops; not 3 - 7 minutes of vocals and backgrounds.

I did have to have the pads to bang out my beats and it is heaven. I just entered a new world; don't get it twisted; I can freak any mpc and all it's features; even the technical ones on the spot (advantage - me) And I can capture this on the pc/mac platform in any studio too. The mpd 16 fits in my bag as well does the oxygen 8; plug me in and i'm ready to rock shit anywhere. They are usb powered and battery powered (rock the shit on your laptops man anywhere anytime) That's what it's about with me man.
Much respect to y'all who have the MPc 4000; it is dope as hell and the box can inspire fantastic compositions. The Mpc 4000 is akai's greatest sampler/drum machine ever. I didn't just give up the mpc 4000; I gave up the Triton too; it's just my pref to go portable and virtual too. I have lots of room in the studio now. And I'm having fun because i'm inspired with all this virtual technology;
Main apps heavily in use
Reason 2.0/2.5
Sonic Foundry Vegas 4/Acid 4 Pro/ Sound Forge 6/Cd Architecht 5
Steinberg Cubase 5.1 (sx ain't there yet)
Recycle 2.0
Digital Performer 3/4

Oh shit; man I forgot about the cd duke. The G5's have been pushed back another month (the dual g5's) I cancelled my order; by the time it arrives it will be old technology and apple already shot themself in the foot saying that they will be @ 3 Ghz in a year. The G5 chip is already being reconstructed becasue the memory controller wasn't integrated and apple had to do a workaround. The chip in q2 2004 will have the hypertransport technology included on the chip and the memory controller issue will be worked out.
Tread lightly man. Now is not the time to go to 64 bit; Virtual Pc5 does not work. All 32 bit software is supposed to work with the 64 bit G5 chip but virtual pc does not. There are issues coming up with those pci-x slots and katts that are trying to put their cards in them (pro tools, motu, matrox etc...) and the cards are not working. Motu is already working on updates.
These are 64 bit pci-x slots at 133mhz in the new G5. Apples old pci slots were at 33mhz.
I decided to wait till Q2 2004 cause it's a whole different ball game now with amd and intel going 64 bit. Amd is poppin off 9-23-03; apple's delays are past this date now; so it behooves everyone to wait. The Ibm chip that you know as the G5 was actually the blueprint for the Amd64 and of course even though ibm and amd do R&D Ibm had nothing to do with the strikin similarities of the g5 technology and the amd64.
I have lost lots of repsect for apple already with announcing the G5 in June and saying it will ship mid-august; The dual 2's haven't yet shipped; many like you are seeing dates go from 8-29 to 9-28 with no explanations. From June to the end of september is now a lifetime in technological terms. It is known that as soon as you buy your computer and take it home that it is already dated but this situation with apple here is going to have a computer that is all but extinct.
The G5 is barely outperforming AMD and Intels current 32 bit technology. And I'm talkin the dual processor kid. Apple is trying to gloat about barely beating 32 bit chip sets.
Be careful dawg.
OSX/Panther is not going to be a 64 bit OS neither. Apple can't deliver man and ever since they phased out OS 9 they have done nothing but ufck everything up. Now there's 12 katts that I dealt with that have been apple nuts; apple only; apple exclusive and they have abandoned their G5 orders. On the real.
Tread lightly kid.

Mr. Williams; what up man.
Yep; Yep; I never left Pc; I am however becoming single sided on the issue and stepping far far away from the mac man. Lots of issues on that end with the audio ish.
Katts y'all need to check Gritrecords out; this is raw hip hop minus the homogenized, commercialized mayhem that is on the airwaves. Many on air personalities as well as disc jockey's throughout the country are hailing Gritrecords/Inebriated rhythm as the saviours of hip hop.
If you love hip hop and are true to the game then you owe it to yourself to see what this is about. Hip Hop survives by re-inventing itself constantly; Every now and again it becomes stagnant; boring; "I'm so and so; I'm this I'm that" (krs-1's true words from philosophy) the current crop of what we are being poisoned with and accepting has become a huge problem. Peep the latest from Gritrecords and become part of the solution.

The Mpc 4000 OS; last i heard believe it or not was that it was still being tested. These things had a tremendous impact on my decision in selling it.
Mr Williams; Holla; I have some questions about rendering Video; basically how fast or slow it is on a pentium 4 or amd xp+ 2400 and later.

Peace

By marlowilliams Fri Aug 29, 2003 8:40 pm
vsti's and Cubase sx are the shit... seriously ....
i will be in NY with KRS on the 8th I believe.. we should try to link.. let me know whats good...

also .. i got an Ill plug in for vox Eqs also.. we need to connect... and get back up to speed..

rendering video is fast as shit on my joint.. i got a P4 2.4 with a gig of ram... right now.. nothing is more versatile than Vegas.. period.. sure Adobe Premier can do more from what Im told, but if you have zero experience with Adobe products, you get lost from the gate.. vegas is very user friendly and handling video is the same as audio .. we master all the audio albums in vegas.. shit is fire.. (no vst plugin support tho..only Dx.. ) but most plugins that you want to use have DX versions..

By oceanstatekillah Fri Aug 29, 2003 9:23 pm
yeah i hate dealing with all the changes in software and operating systems. like os 9 and 10 , they just threw 10 out there and nathan worked for it. apple is cool but they do trainwreck occasionally. to think i got a g4 quicksilver in 2001 for like $1700 . the price drops real quick and the next best comes out b4 the final querks are taken care of

Alrite I just gotta step in here for a sec.

I dont see the advantage here, Serial-ATA or SCSI isnt really needed for storaging, which is really why theres a HD in the 4k. For ram I wouldnt mind if the 4k could handle 1gb of ram just to be on the safe side when using multisampled instruments. But 512 mb is enough though.

I use Recycle with the mpc4k, easy as hell. Chop it how you want it in Recycle, export to akp format, and then just drag it all into ak.sys. Samples laid out on the pads chromatic style, ready to bang away. So theres no advantage there either.

damixx wrote:Effects: Waves platinum bundle Tc Native etc.... too may to name; these are very high quality studio effects.

This, unfortunately I cant argue with. The effects on the 4k isnt really there, but hopefully they'll get better when they sort out the problem in the OS. But then again, when Im done with a track I dont mix it in the mpc. Its not made for that, I mix it all in Cubase SX with Waves plugins and loads of other plugins so again, theres no advantage for the computer platform.

damixx wrote:The only disadvantage is how good hardware sequencing is on any mpc. That's it. I outgrew the 4000. The whole point with any of the mpc's is the hardware sequencer. When I need to timestretch something longer, like an acapella or something, I use Timefactory on the PC. And since AK.SYS is so beautifully integrated into the Windows world its really no difference as compared to timestretch in Timefactory and then reopening the audio file in Cubase. Same procedure really.

Did you use the pads, the external soundcard and the laptop running solely on the laptops battery? I mean did you really try it? Since the external USB gear is powered by the laptop (taking from the battery) and since Halion/Kontakt etc use harddrive streaming sample techniques the harddrive never gets no rest either (stealing more power), I cant see you rocking that more than for an hour tops without having to plugin the power chord. The 4k fits great in a bag I got, I just brought it to my moms house and rocked it in the garden using an extension chord. Was nice as hell, just power up and load the track I wanted to work on and bang away on the pads. No need to starting a laptop, connecting midi cables, rca cables, loading Cubase and Halion and some plugs. Just power on.

Yeah man, much respect to you to for using all them apps and beein able to be creative with them. I tried it and couldnt do it, thats the whole reason I got the 4k. My responses above might sound harsh but I'm not hating on your choice, if it works for you thats great, I couldnt stand it.

Oh and let me add; I use Recycle, Soundforge and Timefactory ALOT in conjunction with the 4k. And when its time to mix I bounce the audio from the 4k to Cubase SX and use nice high quality effects to mix. For some reason I have no problem with that side of the virtual environment. Its mostly the creative part that really dies inside me infront of a computer screen, rocking a mouse to change windows all the time. And speaking as a sysadmin, I must say I'm glad I dont have to worry about bad drivers or an OS thats not built for audio work messing things up etc. Theres just so many things that tends to go wrong with computers (or mostly, Windows hehe).

I wish you all luck with the stuff you got and hope you make some sick beats. I do know its not what you got, its the man rocking the knobs so Im not hating on you.

Peace

I'm gonna come off as a hater now but I really dont care, Ive been making beats and cutting since the mid 80s and I'm just recently decided to speak what I feel on anything after beeing that cat that will just let most things slide.

So here it goes:

I listened to some of the gritrecords releases and, to be honest, I didnt feel most of it. The Soul Supreme album was a real sleeping pill, same old formula; using sped up soul loops. And it was pretty funny hearing A.G. saying shit like "beats on the mpc" in one of the tracks when the rumour is that Soul Supreme is a Fruity Loops cat sampling MP3's he downloaded on the net. Not hating on Fruity Loops (again if it works for you, its fine..) but I was just struck by irony in that. As for the impressive line up of MC's, damn man... If I had that lineup I'd make some classics, instead I felt dissapointed in all the old hero's making such weak efforts. Maybe they just got old, I dont know. Krs1, his latest album (or any track he has made in about 8 years) straight up sucks. He is past his prime by a long shot. I loved BDP, and his first solo albums but Im sorry, the shit he is dropping now isnt close to that. You're only as good as your latest release.

It will no doubt be interesting to hear how the OC record will sound, I really really hope its good as I like OC alot. Im one of the few people that enjoyed his latest album. If gritrecords reads this and needs some real heat then you guys need to find some other producers. I know I could get down better than the stuff you released up until now. You should get with some new blood when it comes to MC's aswell, Nothing wrong in taking the easy way that you guys did. I mean, doesnt matter who would have released an album with a line up of all these legends, even if it was some punk that won the lottery, having the cash to pay em all to do it, it would still get loads of attention and be rated as good by alot of people. Thats cause most people today has no heart for this shit.

**** it, enough with this. Time to go and listen to some ill J-Zone tracks, thats one of the producers that stole the heat and ran with it.

Peace

Marlo: Holla when u r in town; let's link up, I'm good after 3:30PM. I'll put you up duke; I still live in the same area when you last came through to bklyn (movin on up)

Serial ATA and Scsi have a clear advantage when streaming multisamples from your hardrive on the pc. Which you are supposed to be able to do in the mpc 4000 but can't until the NEW mpc 1.50 OS. This could be one of the things holding it up.

As far as the laptop; I can plug it in and use oxygen and the midi usb pads without powercords or the batteries (for oxygen and the pad) most of us who own laptops have a spare battery and who in the world would do an entire session running on dc power? LOL. Just pokin duke! When the laptop is powered by battery; the same way you could plug in the mpc 4000 in I could plug in the laptop and play my keys and bang my drums; The mpc 4000 is gigantic too; too big to carry around but all good if you found a solution to carry it. You can't jam anywhere anytime without a powercord though; and yes I have done it on a plane; boat and at starbucks waitin for my homeys.
Recycle as AKP; Been there done that; Aksys; pad editor; been there done that too. B4 aksys and the mpc 4000; we had Mike the Man Goins with the mpc editor for the 2000 and 3000.
Recycle as rex file in cubase or in rex player or redrum in reason is monster compared to what you can do to a loop on the mpc. There is no comparison.
Again like I said; the only thing is the sequencer; but I can buy a second hand old school mpc 2000 for 500 bucks or a used asq10 for 125.00. (this is the sequencer section alone of the mpc without pads)
Anyhow; windows 98 SE and windows xp have no issues; NONE; and I'm not a techie; I plug shit in; install drivers (mostly if their specialized otherwise no need to install drivers) and the isht works. I have cubase with the midex 8 and there's zero latency.

The Mpc is wicked but is vast showing it's age in this time of robust technologies. There's no need to go back and forth and bounce tracks in and out when you can do it all in a pc/wac eeer um mac; vocals and all.

Pop your headphones on; fire up reason or cubase and you can create edit mix, master and burn a song to an audio cd or mp3 that anyone could play anywhere.

Shit these days katts can use a laptop with traktor dj studio 2 alone to do a party; yeah i still get down analog or digital. The z8 is goin virtual man; it's a matter of time before somebody like propellerheads makes a virtual mpc (re-mpc) it's over after that.
Oceanstate Gigaton; all the regulars; keep freekin the mpc; yall had it for a minute posted some tips on it too and did so with nothing but respect; One love to yall for keepin it real and not artificial. Its katts like yall that keep me respectin the mpc hardware.
Kalei; katts like you rockin the mpc is what made me sell mine. Dealin with kattts that plunk their dough down and think they can call themselves producers/beatbangers or whatever because they did so and tryin to correct instead of collect info makes you stand out like a sore thumb.

There really is beauty in silence; you need to discover that dawg!

Sleeping Pill?
Them katts that did a write up in billboard magazine must have had some starbucks then.
Them katts at the last hip hop convention who showed much love and support as well as respect for the project must've been doing it out of the kindness of their heart.
This incredible movement that is coming about because of the efforts of a few must be some sort of smoke screen.
Marlo; keep doing what you are doing kid; this is why noteworthies don't post on bulletin boards. You must know who this katt is; It's all good. Oceanstate, Gigaton and the other regular katts nevah came off like this; there's been nothing but love and unity up until this point on the real.
PS Oceanstate; the quicksilver is the joint; it outperformed the g5 1.6 in an assortment of benchmark tests. Keep it and wait till everyone is up to speed with the whole 64 bit Hardware/software scene.

In closing; here we go again!! This will probably be one of my last posts as the atmosphere has changed. Oceanstate, Gigaton, mabz, Marlo; yall know what time it is with the computer isht; I was just tryin to put yall on in the direction I went and why as well as my view on the technologies that i'm now using as opposed to what I was using. If I came off any other way; my apologies.

Peace

Actually, I didnt know the 4k was supposed to be able to stream samples from the hd. The only thing I thought was coming concerning HD stuff was the audition from HD feature. And still, Serial-ATA only gives you 150mb/s speed which isnt much faster than ATA-133 which gives you 133mb/s. Granted that S-ATA doesnt share the bandwith like the older ATA solution but thats not a problem with the 4k. Your using EITHER the hd or the cdrom which means you get the full 133mb/s. You cant seriously tell me that 17mb/s is gonna give you that much advantage? I dont think the OS is taking time because of this, Im pretty sure its other stuff like the 16 level feature which wasnt a planned feature. But thats only speculation from both of us.

Yeah ok. Your trying to tell me that a laptop, and external audio card, the mpc midi pads (which is pretty big too) and chords, audio cables, midi cables, extra battery etc isnt taking up much space? LOL thats funny. I bet you gonna put up all that shit at starbucks so you can make a little loop while waiting for your friend to show up 20 minutes later.

I never even came close to the suggestion that you would do a whole project using the batteries as that would be insane to even try. I was just pointing out that after an hour or so you gonna have to do something, like plugging it in or switching the battery.

damixx wrote:Recycle as AKP; Been there done that; Aksys; pad editor; been there done that too. B4 aksys and the mpc 4000; we had Mike the Man Goins with the mpc editor for the 2000 and 3000.

I have no idea why you wrote this. I didnt even mention the pad editor or anything about previous mpc models. All I said was that it worked just as good as for using it with Cubase and Halion for instance. Once you sent it through AK.SYS all you need to do is bang on the pads.

The software route? Been there done that.

damixx wrote:Recycle as rex file in cubase or in rex player or redrum in reason is monster compared to what you can do to a loop on the mpc. There is no comparison.

I think you get so defensive that you're really missing the point of my post. I said "this is what works and doesnt work FOR ME". If it floats your boat I'm happy for you. Im very familiar with the different formats, such as REX etc. I simply dont need Reason to manipulate a loop. For me there is no comparison in doing it inside the 4k as it is the most creative environment FOR ME. I think you should re-read my post.

damixx wrote:Again like I said; the only thing is the sequencer; but I can buy a second hand old school mpc 2000 for 500 bucks or a used asq10 for 125.00. (this is the sequencer section alone of the mpc without pads)

Ok, First of all theres no such thing as Zero latency when speaking of audiocards in a Windows environment. Yes, it says 0 ms in the setup and it SOUNDS like 0 ms. But its not. Did you know that midi isnt 0 latency? It has about 5 ms latency. The thing is, we as humans cant hear any latency under 10 ms. And then I mean REAL 10 ms latency, not the fake latency the driver reports. Think about it. The "sound" travels through so many junctions inside the CPU and internals connections. Are you really honestly believing its 0 ms latency? Dont believe the hype.

And your stuff works. Congratulations. Thats not the scenario for LOADS of users out there that took the "virtual" route. Just check the forums on Cubase.net for more info on that. I have no doubt in my mind that you will run into some serious issues with your setup aswell, as it happenes to everyone eventually.

damixx wrote:The Mpc is wicked but is vast showing it's age in this time of robust technologies. There's no need to go back and forth and bounce tracks in and out when you can do it all in a pc/wac eeer um mac; vocals and all.

Sure some things are already outdated on the 4k. Like the USB. They should really have updated it to USB2 instead of having USB1.1 on it. But, I dont mind bouncing tracks. Doing it ADAT style takes no time at all. You can bounce 8 tracks at once. And vocals etc.. What I use the 4k for is making beats. The vocals is recorded in Cubase SX. So theres really not much hassle to bounce the audio from the 4k into the PC. Takes 5 minutes and your set.

damixx wrote:Pop your headphones on; fire up reason or cubase and you can create edit mix, master and burn a song to an audio cd or mp3 that anyone could play anywhere.

Ehh.. I do all that. Only difference is that I use the 4k for making the beat. Then its off with the beat to the PC. Then I can mix, master, and burn audio cd or make mp3s. Fantastic isnt it?

damixx wrote:it's a matter of time before somebody like propellerheads makes a virtual mpc (re-mpc) it's over after that.

This proves to me you really didnt understand my post. I cant be creative when sitting infront of a computer rocking a mouse and clicking on window after window etc. I'm not really alone there either. If I could happy like you with the software route, I probably would go that route. But hey, its not working for me. No need to take that personal dude.

damixx wrote:Kalei; katts like you rockin the mpc is what made me sell mine. Dealin with kattts that plunk their dough down and think they can call themselves producers/beatbangers or whatever because they did so and tryin to correct instead of collect info makes you stand out like a sore thumb.

Ok. First of all, if you re-read my post (getting boring to repeat this...) I basically said "if it works for you thats great, but it doesnt for me." I never hated on your solution or anything like that. I just spoke my mind on what I saw as faulty info on technical aspects on why the computer route would be such a great solution. We all have different opinions on stuff bro, deal with it. And I dont "think" I am a producer/beatbanger. Thats pretty funny to read here on the internet. You dont know shit about what I've done in the past, I could have a huge track record or no track record. Making assumptions like that is only stupid man. It really has NOTHING to do with anything in this post.

damixx wrote:There really is beauty in silence; you need to discover that dawg!

Yeah theres also beauty in not beeing all defensive and heated. Ive been silent way to long bro, its time to speak my mind.

Hehe.. yeah. And the reason Jay-Z is the biggest selling rapper right now is because he is the best MC out there. Right?
And what your suggesting is that I shouldnt have an opinion since someone else said it was good? Thats not me bud.

Go and take a cold shower, and re-read my initial post. It was never anything personal. Not even an attack on gritrecords, just my opinion. I even said that I hope the OC record is going to be good since I always liked his stuff.

Man its sad to see this type of shit. I wasnt beeing rude to anyone. I wasnt hating on you even. I said "I'm glad it works for you but it doesnt for me." But yet you took it like an attack. Trying to insult me just because I dont agree with your opinions. Sorry bro, I wont fall for it.

Now lets drop this, and get back to make some beats cause I know that's what you really want to do aswell.

This is a good discussion, please don't turn it into a flame match.

The MPC is tighter than a PC, no doubt. The PC is more flexible but not as portable, not as self contained, and certainly not as tight.

Pretty mucht the end of story

Whatever works for you in the relevant situation.

I told you bout them g5's; that's why i cancelled. It's def not demand that's holding them joints up; it's the performance issues and configuration which is already being changed. Trust me; let this first batch go by. A reliable source saved me 3000+;

Anyow I'll holla at you on the e-mail.
