humming noise from my mpc60

my 60 has started making this humming noise when the power is on
anyone knows how take care of that problem

Humming from the power supply/chassis ?

Humming / Whining from the DISPLAY back light ?

It doesn't come from the backlight in my experience, but where the inverter is located, if it is a high piched whine that you can hear when you put your ear next to the play stop record buttons, then you should search the forum for High Pitched Whine in the 60 forum, I report a simple fix, but you should know how to solder to get it right.

ah, I should have precised the location of the sound ..

I think it is from the power supply!
the sound comes more from the upper right
that means I do not think that it comes from the audio outports
(although i did not see that as an possibility when i tried to locate the whining perhaps i should try to hear something there as well)

its impossible to locate the whining is slightly decreased when I take a firm grip around the display.. but I still belive it is not the source of this evil..

Ah, I have not seen this, but I have heard that new backlights can fix this, but I can't say for sure.

but honestly Im not shure what I want to buy..
Is something wrong with the display I cannot see any problems with the resoution, contrast or any flickering..

I read your post about the inverter.. do you think I should buy an inverter too?

No, the inverter I bought was damaged in some way and didn't work at all (backlight off!) I recommend using the electrical tape fix I posted if you are up for it, any tech and solder savvy buddy should be able to help.

An anecdote for the "hum" factor.

My LinnDrum also hummed like, well, a Hummer ... Had to open it up and screw down the power supply which had worked it's way loose over the course of time since the early 80's. The magnetic field from the transformer core in conjunction with it's AC switching frequency and proximity to the unit's magnetic permeable chassis was causing mechanical vibration. ( a motor effect ).

An MPC60 or MPC3000 could easily suffer in this regard too.

Open the MPC60 up and check that the power supply transformer and respective supply boards are locked down tight.

As for the backlight issue ... Elm has said all so far that has been needed.

Aw man, have you ever tried to remove a MPC 60 Transformer? Ugh, man was that painful.

Nut and bolt assembly even with screw oles in the bolts were tough to take off, luckilly, not difficult to tighten. I have seen that rpoblem in a Prophet 5 though.

inverter was real easy to replace. only 3 contacts to de/solder. def recommend it

Prophet 5, Eventide Ultra Harmonizer from around the H3K series ... Even the LM1 from 78 to some degree all suffer this problem.

there might be bee inside it. once i though my ears were ringing but there was a bee in my cans.

ordered from vst for 33 bucks. it has a stamp that says 'NICHIA n105-05-5' but couldnt find this part anywhere. i looked up this company and i dont think they make this part anymore. mouser or digikey dont have any in stock either
