Exchange tips and tricks for the Akai MPC4000

I'm about to take a leap into audio editing on PC's, and you guys will have to excuse my ignorance when it comes to all that DAW DSP talk as I haven't worked with computers for audio nor paid much attention to it in years..

So I take it akasys doesn't allow you to just use whatever application your free mind desires, somewhere I read it won't use "PT" as a editor as its not a "standard audio editor"

PT is a bit over the top as an editor though .. but I'd love to be able to use Realtime-streatching programs like Melodine as a audio editor,
not possible?? Y/N

if No, why?
because akasys does not recognize it as an audio editor?or because the software isn't a standard editor? what is it exactly that limits me to pick an application, do I have to look for something like standard audio editor approved?

If Yes, can I then apply all the VST I want? as long as the audio editor is compatible with VST,

I'd really like to work with something with real-time pitch/time audio to midi editing,

www.digital-ear.com is another inexpensive alternative I'm thinking of,

I guess I could just drop the snobby mentality of running it in Akasys and just run it as a separate window on the desktop and drag and drop files from the selected akasys editor onto melodine or digital ear or whatever,

any benefits to having editor within akasys? why wouldn’t I just drag and drop files from akasys to other software on the desktop, same thing??

u need a program that "opens" wav files. Pro tools "opens" ptle sessions, it "imports" wav files.
Cool edit, recycle, soundforge... they open the wav files. Sequencers like pt, cubase, logic, live, tracktion.. they import wavs

maybe you could drag a wav from aksys into a soft audio sequencer wich does timestretch. Ill try it out with Live 4. I dont think ProTools can do this.. But Im not sure

hmmm.. if it loads wav. its compatable with aksys

thanks for making it so simple...

Digital Ear does indeed alow you to load wav. although it's notingh on pair with Melodine, I think its sufficent as an editor but no VST :?

I just found another cool thing:
You can drag and drop a MIDI file from aksys straight into Logic, edit it, save it to desktop, drag it back to aksys.

MIDI files are extremely small so this all happens in no time ;)

just did some more research digital ear is mono 16bit 44 only,

Melodine cost a fortune and drinks CPU like a Hobo in a wine cellar..

BUT Melodine can Open wav files, so you could actually run a complete realtime audio/pitch editing software along with as much VST + Virtual Mixer with as much EQ as your cpu can take + all your MIDI tracks as just an Audio editor in akasys, now if I can run it in sync with the 4k  ... bha .. dunno this is something numark is going to do with akasys anyways (I assume..
Keep searching I guess..

what about Audition and a vst time stretcher?
.. Or Prosoniq Timefactory (standalone)

By glide Thu Feb 24, 2005 4:19 pm
thanks mate!!

I'll look into that, like I said I'm not too much into all the DAW VST thang, so it's great to get a some guidelines, didn't even know there was such a thing as vst time stretcher and I've never heard of prosonic, so big up ikke!! I'll cheek it out

Audacity is free, try it. Digital-ear looks interesting but it's p.c only.

I'm using Bias Peak 4 LE on my Mac G4 with aKSys, works like a charm for me. And Blue Haze, you were right about the better responses with Peak and v1.70, good looking out bro.

if your a Mac user, i'd definitely suggest DSP-Quattro over Peak. I own both and Quattro is a far better program. i haven't opened up Peak in over a year. DSP is not only better IMO but it is cheaper. you can check over at OSXAudio.com to see how many Peak to DSP switchers there have been.

Thanks for the info actuel. I had never even looked into another sample editor because, Peak's doing the job i need it to. BUT, i'm always open minded to innovation. This DSP-Quattro 2.0 does look like a few steps further. For experience purposes, i'll give it a run and let you know what i think. Thanks again.

i just got word from Stephen over at DSP-Quattro that they're planning an update in the couple of months. among many of the new features, slicing/transient finding will be implemented. (bug off Recycle!)

i'm really excited about this. i already think DSP-Quattro is the best Mac editor out there, but this is the nail in the coffin.

I`m curious how well does it work with aksys? Is it stable? I use third party effects Equim, Firum EQs and audio units does they work with DSP Quattro and will the program be able to save a akai program like Recycle of course Peak cannot do this either but if Quattro can I`ll look into it and I see that it got Electronic Musicians Award for 2005 so it aint no joke. :D Hit me back with a review.
