limited ram

If anyone listen's to independent label hiphop, a few producer's who I think are pretty insane, sound like all they are using were sampler's with very limited ram. Some were using just sp1200's for there tracks. besides long vocal sample's that could come staright off the turntables... but the beats seem like they would take a lot more than the 10 seconds of sample time when just using an sp1200. do they sync up with tape or whatever and then just dump it and sequence more on the machine then dump it, etc? i dont understand how they are doing it. i just recently got an mpc 60II with 2.12 and no scsi. this thing is pretty limited unless all you want to do is drums i think.

Have a think about what you typed ...
A lot can be done within the limitations of an MPC60's OS and memory framework.
Limited ? Only by your imagination ...
Try sampling in a beat and "cutting it up" then re-sequencing same to your own taste...
You'll get the idea pretty quickly I reckon.
Oh ... get the OS updated from 2.12 and add the SCSI option also...
Then everything will make sense even more.

yea I hear what your saying... I plan to get the 3.10 update and also get the extra ram before I get the scsi, since thats the expensive upgrade. and I still need some recording equipment. If I can go without the scsi for a bit, things would go smoother. Then again dont know how much fun I'm gonna have with floppy's though, I dont even have a floppy drive on my computer anymore these days.

And also, with the 2.12... im not sure if i could chop up the samples so good, i still need time on the machine.

For one song 26 seconds is mor ethan enough, perhaps for a few songs. I have filled up two pad bank with drum samples and had 18 seconds left over plenty for long vocal samples among other things. I am kinda anal about filling my banks, but If you just want the samples you are gonna use in a track, then you could divide up your time how you wish.

plenty of kicks and snares are short, so you can fit 5 of those in 1 second of sampletime. I doubt people multitrack their SP 1200's with different samples loaded much, it's really not needed, and if it is, they get a rack sampler.

that and sampling at 45rpm for example then tuning down can save a lot of sample time too, just to be anal and all inclusive.

I posted a question similar to this like 2 days ago. I met a mpc 60 user and asked him. Most of the "big time" producers just record there tracks and everything onto protools. Then they save the original tracks on a disk just in case something needs to be changed. Nothin ever really gets saved to there 60's and SP 1200's.

thanks guys... well right now I dont even have 26 seconds of sample time since im only working w/ OS 2.12 with no memory expansion upgrade. im new with the mpc's so I am trying to figure out how I am going to go about producing what I need. I'm lovin this machine though. i gotta get the upgrades, so first things first, but i also want to get a few rack sampler's in the future as well.
